Jahrhundert waren der Ausgangspunkt für den gewaltbereiten Widerstand gegen die britische Herrschaft und gegen die Unterdrückung durch die zumeist protestantische Oberschicht. Das Buch ist eine Einführung in diese Geheimbünde seit 1760 und erzählt die Geschichte der Gewaltkultur in Irland. Darüber hinaus gibt "Geheimbünde in Irland 1760-1870" einen Einblick in die Rituale und Strukturen dieser Gesellschaften und Gruppierungen und widmet ein Kapitel speziell dem Faction Fighting. Diese kuriose Mischung aus Sport und Gewalt war bis ins 19. Jahrhundert Bestandteil der Jahrmärkte in den ländlichen Gebieten Irlands und spielte auch bei späteren Geheimbünden eine tragende soziale Funktion. Zu guter Letzt wird die Entwicklung und der Zustand der Geheimbünde in Irland vom Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts bis ins Jahr 2008 beleuchtet.
