The study was inspired by the research on Extensive Reading (ER), an approach to teaching and learning a foreign language without using a dictionary, but aiming to make learners better readers by doing a lot of reading with the focus on meaning rather than grammar. The conducting of the research has involved very much hard and difficult work. The procedure conformed to the principles of ER. The study employed a double-control pre- and post-test (Solomon) design, using six student groups: two experimental groups and four control groups. Multiple measurements used to assess comprehension with three texts were written recall protocols and translation tests; multiple-choice questions with twelve texts in timed reading to assess reading fluency; and a survey questionnaire and in-depth interviews for attitudes to ER. The findings suggest positive effects of ER on comprehension, fluency and attitudes. 384 pp. Englisch.

O estudo foi inspirado na pesquisa sobre Leitura Extensiva (RE), uma abordagem de ensino e aprendizagem de uma língua estrangeira sem o uso de dicionário, mas com o objetivo de tornar os alunos melhores leitores, fazendo muita leitura com foco no significado e não na gramática. A condução da pesquisa envolveu um trabalho muito árduo e difícil. O procedimento obedeceu aos princípios da ER. O estudo empregou um desenho pré e pós-teste de duplo controle (Solomon), usando seis grupos de alunos: dois grupos experimentais e quatro grupos de controle. Várias medidas usadas para avaliar a compreensão com três textos foram protocolos de evocação escritos e testes de tradução; questões de múltipla escolha com doze textos em leitura cronometrada para avaliar a fluência de leitura; e um questionário de pesquisa e entrevistas em profundidade para atitudes em ER.
