Albuminabzug. Kabinettformat. Rückseitig zwei gedruckte Aufkleber mit oben genannter Bezeichnung und Nummer bzw. "Oberlausitz. Original-Phot. von R. Halm in Zittau". Sehr guter Abzug. Halm erwarb 1868 in Zittau das Atelier des verstorbenen Photographen Rudolph Degelow, das er bis 1879 betrieb, dann verpachtete und 1882 verkaufte. Danach konzentrierte er sich hauptsächlich auf die Landschaftsphotographie und ist besonders für seine Aufnahmen aus dem Riesengebirge bekannt. Schon um 1872 hatte er in Hermsdorf (heute als Sobieszów polnisch und Stadtteil von Hirschberg bzw. Jelenia Góra) ein Atelier eröffnet, dem dann weitere in Hirschberg, Warmbrunn (heute Cieplice) und Görlitz folgten. 1887 zog er nach Zerbst um und verließ Schlesien wohl auf Grund der schlechten Wirtschaftslage, weitere Stationen waren Mügel bei Dresden, Hainsberg/Sachsen und vermurlich ab 1904 Eisenach. Aus diesen Zeiten sind nur vergleichsweise wenige Aufnahmen überliefert. 1910 verstarb er in Thal bei Eisenach (heute Ortsteil von Ruhla/Thüringen). About the artist: Born in San Leandro, California, Edward Borein became one of the most popular artists of western scene painting, equally adept at ink drawing, watercolor, and etching. He was raised in San Leandro, a western cow town, in a family where his father was a county politician. Edward had many childhood memories of herded cattle and their cowboys, which he began sketching at the age of five. He was educated in the Oakland, California schools, and at the age of 17 began working on a ranch near Oakland and then drifted and sketched as a working cowboy throughout the Southwest, Mexico, and Guatemala. It was said that he practiced his art on anything he could find from bunkhouse walls to scraps of paper. At age 19, he enrolled at the San Francisco Art School, his only formal art training, and there he met Jimmy Swinnerton and Maynard Dixon who encouraged him in his art career. The first person to purchase his work was Charles Lummis, editor of The Land and Sunshine magazine in California, and the two became life-long friends. Borein and Lucille Maxwell were married in the Lummis home. Borein, a typical westerner in dress and manner, also became close friends with Charles Russell, actor Will Rogers, and President Theodore Roosevelt. Borein often traveled north to visit Russell in Great Falls, Montana and to travel among Indian tribes. In 1899, Borein visited Arizona while returning from Mexico. By 1902, he was a successful illustrator in San Francisco for the San Francisco Call, and in 1907 to enhance his illustration skills, went to New York to learn etching techniques. There he enrolled in the Art Students League and was a student of Child Hassam. In the theatre district, he opened a studio that became a gathering place for 'lonesome' westerners such as Charles Russell, Will Rogers, Olaf Seltzer and Oscar Borg. But Borein did not feel at home in New York, so he moved to Santa Barbara, California in 1921. This was a final move. He and his wife built a Hopi-style home, and he taught at the Santa Barbara School of the Arts until his death, and also turned increasingly from oil to watercolor painting. The photographs open with an image of him completing a painting of a cowboy working with mustangs in a corral, with Quigley holding his palette, and glimpses of Portland, OR through the studio window in the background; another two show him and his smartly dressed friends during the 1930's while he was painting for the Works Progress Administration Federal Artist's program; and five additional photos by Santa Barbara photographer Karl Obert depict him riding with others at the Los Rancheros Visitadores in 1958. The exhibit catalogues include his June-July, 1949 exhibition at the Maryhill Museum of Fine Arts, which also included a number of his original woodcarvings; the 1962 Western Art Exhibits sponsored by Los Rancheros Visitadores which featured works by Quigley, Charley Russell, Will James, Edward Borein, Joe De Yong, Olaf Wieghorst, Frank Tenney Johnson, and others; and the 1964 gallery showing of Oil Paintings and Wood Carvings at the Oregon Society of Artists Gallery in Portland, OR including a photo of the artist carving sculptures. The several sales broadsides include one signed by Quigley for his bronzes, with the verbiage that he had intended to cast 20, but there were only 10, and these include "Unloaded," "Indian Scout," and "Bronc Rider."Quigley expanded his career through the 1930's and 1940's by gaining inspiration from Yakama Indians in and around Toppenish while visiting horse trader Frank Green, and would often return there. He writes in one of the undated Christmas cards that he had just "spent 3 interesting weeks with a couple of mustangers and the Indians on wild horse round-ups on the Yakima Reservation. Got a lot of good material and have 2 - 30" x 40" paintings finished." The stationery included here all reproduce paintings by Quigley of mustangs on the Palouse, as well as pen & ink drawing of the cabin built by the artist on Cedar Creek near Mt. Hood and Sandy, Oregon.
