In meiner hiesigen Stellung bin ich, so zu sagen, der oberste Kunstwart der Pfalz und als solcher wendet sich Jeder, der ein altes Bild hat und es verwerthen will, an mich. So hat mir dieser Tage eine hiesige Dame ein zwar künstlerisches nicht sehr wertvolles, jedoch gut charakteristisches und gezeichnetes Bildnis des Florentiner Gelehrten Petrus Victorius [Piero Vettori], 1570 gemalt von Alessandro Allori (1535-1607), geschickt und gemeint, die Galerie könne es vielleicht kaufen. Diese gute Dame ist sehr reich, hat aber durchaus keinen Sinn und kein Verständnis für alte Kunst, sonst würde sie das Bild, welches immerhin sehr interessant ist, behalten haben. So aber will sie es fort haben, um Platz für neue Bilder zu bekommen und das ist ein respectabler Zug, dem man gerecht werden muß, um so mehr, als sie bereits sehr schöne Anfänge von Bildbesitz gemacht hat [.] Von diesem Gesichtspunkt aus darf ich gewiß hoffen, auch Dein Interesse für den Verkauf oben genannten Bildes in Anspruch nehmen zu können und frage bei Dir an, was das Beste ist, was ich darin thun kann. Vielleicht weißt Du einen Liebhaber oder eine in Aussicht stehende Auction, der es angereicht werden kann, jedenfalls möchte ich Dich um Deine Ansicht über den etwa zu erzielenden Preis bitten.
