Max Kaser (1906-1997) ha sido uno de los más esclarecidos romanistas del siglo XX.Nacido el 21 de abril de 1906 en Viena, de 1924 a 1928 estudió Derecho en Graz y se doctoró en 1928. Estudió Derecho Romano con Steinwenter, y en Munich fue discípulo del gran romanista Leopold Wenger con quien trabajó sobre problemas fundamentales entre el Derecho Privado y el Derecho Procesal Civil. En 1931 consiguió la venia docendi en Derecho Romano y Derecho Civil. En 1932 fue nombrado profesor de la Universidad de Münster de Derecho Romano y Civil. En 1959 se trasladó como profesor a Hamburgo, habiendo también desempeñado cátedra en la Universidad de Salzburgo, de donde fue nombrado profesor honorario. Impartió cursos y conferencias en las más importantes universidades del mundo.Su producción científica es importantísima, tanto por la cantidad como por la calidad e influencia en esta rama del derecho.Entre las publicaciones más importantes destacan su famoso Derecho Privado Romano, con primera edición en 1955 en dos tomos y con numerosas ediciones posteriores.
