Otherwise in very good condition. - Content: De studie van Aristophanes werk draagt de laatste jaren een duidelijk specialistisch karakter. Men behoeft een vrij recente bibliografie als die van Dover maar in te zien om te constateren, dat het onderzoek zich vooral richt op bepaalde aspecten als taal en stijl, structuur van de komedies, de verhouding tot Euripides, de sociale achtergronden e.d. Deze specialisering is begrijpelijk; in de loop van generaties heeft zich een min of meer duidelijk beeld gevormd van de man achter het werk, van zijn houding ten opzichte van zijn tijd en zijn milieu, en men verneemt dan ook nauwelijks stemmen die pleiten voor herziening of correctie van de geijkte voorstellingen. Zou men de verschillende oordeelvellingen over de persoonlijkheid van de dichter onder één noemer willen brengen, dan kan men het beste spreken van traditionalisme, een begrip, dat a.h.w. de kern vormt waaromheen men alle waarderingen kan groeperen. Een kleine selectie van citaten is voldoende om dit enigszins te illustreren. Aristophanes konnte das Bedenkliche und Gefährliche nur deshalb in so grelles Licht setzen, weil er sich selbst in all der überstürzten Entwicklung ringsum einen wachen Sinn für die Mächte der Tradition und der Beharrung bewahrt hatte, die im Leben der menschen und Völker ebenso nötig sind wie die anderen, die in die Zukunft weisenden, aldus een recent oordeel van Lesky. Daarnaast kan men een uiting plaatsen als die van Croiset: Personne nétait plus Athé-nien á lancienne mode quAristophane, bien que trés moderne a certains égards. De algemene overeenstemming sluit echter nuanceringen niet uit. T.a.v. Aristophanes houding in politicis kan men allerlei variaties opmerken. Bij Rose treffen we de merkwaardige uitspraak: Aristophanes was a supporter of what we may loosely call the Conservative Party in Athens. Müller-Strübing sprak in 1873 over Aristophanes und seine damalige Freunde, ich meine die lako-nisirende Partei der oligarchischen Reaktion , waartegenover men een opinie als die van Lesky kan stellen: Keinen Anhalt aber haben wir, um ihn einer bestimmten Partei zuzurechnen en: Keine Rede davon, dass er grundsätzlich ein Gegner der Demokratie gewesen wäre . Weer uit de 19e eeuw stamt een uitspraak van Koek: Auf-gewachsen in der Begeisterung für das Athen der Marathonkämpfer, widmet er seine Fähigkeiten dem Dienste jener echten und wahren Aristokratie, welche den Adel in der Selbstlosigkeit und in der Hingebung für das Gemeinwesen sieht . Een ander accent legt weer Schmid: Seine Parteinahme trägt einen ethisch-ästhetischen, in der Verherrlichung der Vorzeit einen romantischen Charakter *. Het is duidelijk dat alle variaties toch onder de ene noemer van het begrip traditionalisme gebracht kunnen worden, al is er geen eenstemmigheid t.a.v. Aristophanes politieke houding en bedoeling. Bij alle critici wordt de gedachte uitgesproken dat Aristophanes werk blijk geeft van respect voor en verheerlijking van het verleden. Nu is de afwezigheid van een aan dit thema gewijde studie nog geen voldoende rechtvaardiging voor een onderzoek zoals hier ondernomen wordt. Ik meen echter, dat de eenstemmigheid waarmee in het algemeen over traditionalisme gesproken werd en wordt dikwijls aanleiding heeft gegeven tot al te generaliserende uitspraken, die geen recht doen aan de differentiatie die in het werk van de dichter zelf bestaat. Het is niet mijn bedoeling het gangbare beeld te verstoren, maar een poging te doen het begrip traditionalisme nadere inhoud te geven en daardoor nuanceringen aan te brengen in een m.i. vaak al te statisch beeld. Dit doel hoop ik langs verschillende wegen te bereiken; ie, door aan te tonen, dat het verleden in Aristophanes werk een zeer gevarieerde inhoud heeft; 2e, door het schetsen van een m.i. duidelijk waar te nemen ontwikkeling in het werk van de dichter ten opzichte van dit traditionalisme en een vergelijking van Aristophanes werk met dat van andere komediedichters t.a.v. deze thematiek; 3 e, door een bespreking van de vraag of men de frequente evocatie van het verleden in het werk van de dichter dient te zien als een louter dramatisch procédé, of als een fundamenteel kenmerk van zijn oeuvre, waarbij speciaal met de opvatting van Süss in discussie getreden zal worden . De hoofdstukken I tot V zullen aan het eerste punt gewijd zijn, in hoofdstuk VI zal punt 2, in hoofdstuk VII het laatste punt aan de orde gesteld worden. De beperkingen van zulk een onderzoek liggen voor de hand. Van de veertig dramas die op naam van Aristophanes staan zijn er slechts elf bewaard gebleven, terwijl de fragmenten van de verloren stukken tot zeer uiteenlopende interpretaties en reconstructies aanleiding hebben gegeven. Ik zal mij vooral met de bewaarde stukken bezig houden, en de fragmenten slechts zijdelings bij de bespreking betrekken, zonder in het algemeen in te gaan op de uiteenlopende opvattingen die over de verloren stukken bestaan. Al zal dus slechts een kwart van het werk van de dichter voorwerp van onderzoek kunnen zijn, de spreiding van de elf bewaarde stukken is van dien aard, dat men mag aannemen dat zij een enigermate betrouwbaar beeld van de ontwikkeling geven.
