Alfred Kast, als Sohn eines Arztes am 25.Juli 1856 zu Illenau bei Achern in Baden geboren, studierte in Heidelberg, Freiburg und Leipzig und promovierte 1879 in Freiburg. Er war Assistent bei Erb in Heidelberg und Leipzig und trat 18…81 in Freiburg eine klinische Assistentenstelle bei Bäumler an. Hier auch im Physiologisch-chemischen Institut unter R.Baumann tätig, habilitierte er sich 1883 (1886 a.o. Prof.), wurde 1888 Direktor des Krankenhauses Hamburg-Eppendorf und wirkte seit 1892 als Ordinarius für innere Medizin in Breslau. Seine ersten Arbeiten waren hauptsächlich neurologischen Inhalts (Neuritis, Ataxie, zerebrale Kinderlähmung, Aphasie); ihnen folgten allgemein klinische Arbeiten. Kast fürhte das Sulfonal, das Trional und Phenacetin in den ärztlichen Heilschat ein. -cf.Fischer, p.741.

An den Chirurgen Vinzenz Czerny (18421916) in Heidelberg: Herr Dr. Riede, einer unserer tüchtigsten u. strebsamsten Mitarbeiter an den Hamburger Krankenhäusern, möchte zwecks seiner Weiterbildung die Heidelberger Kliniken besuchen. Ich nehme mir die Freiheit, ihn durch diese Zeilen auf sei…nen Wunsch Ihrem Wohlwollen warm zu empfehlen [.]". Alfred Kast war als Professor in Freiburg tätig und wurde 1888 als Direktor des Krankenhauses Eppendorf nach Hamburg berufen. 1892 nahm er einen Ruf als Ordinarius für innere Medizin und Direktor der medizinischen Klinik nach Breslau an. Czerny war seit 1868 Assistent von Theodor Billroth, habilitierte sich 1871 für Chirurgie und wurde Professor in Freiburg, später in Heidelberg. Czerny, dem erstmals die Kehlkopfexstirpation am Hund gelang, hatte maßgeblichen Anteil am Fortschritt der Chirurgie, begründete moderne Methoden auf dem Gebiet der Bauchchirurgie, der plastischen Operationen, der chirurgischen Krebsbehandlung und führte 1878 die erste vaginale Totalexstirpation des Uterus nach moderner Technik aus" (DBE). Es fand in zahlreichen Präparaten gegen Migräne, Neuralgien und Rheuma Verwendung. Wegen seiner gesundheitsschädlichen Nebenwirkungen, insbesondere seiner nierenschädigenden Wirkung in Kombination mit anderen Schmerzmedikamenten (Phenacetinnieren oder Analgetikanephropathie) ist die Verwendung als Arzneimittel heute verboten. Wenn ich, trotzdem sie in letzter Zeit ziemlich viel [.] Herzbeschwerden hatte, mich mit ihrer Absicht, nach Karlsbad zu fahren, einverstanden erklärte, habe ich dies wesentlich gethan, weil ich sie unter Ihrer frdl.
