Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: dj. First Edition. First edition of Potter's gothic retelling of Bluebeard, the second issue (with frontispiece properly placed) in the scarce original dust jacket. Beatrix Potter was unable to bear the strain of providing illustrations for SISTER ANNE, therefore the publisher had them executed by American artist Katherine Sturgis. Potter was pleased with Sturgis' artistry, praising her use of black that gave the story "an effective air of mystery" (Linder). This title did not enjoy the popularity of Potter's earlier works, perhaps because it lacked her characteristic art. Potter's evocative and atmospheric narrative make this obscure work unusual in her oeuvre. The last of Beatrix Potter's works published in her lifetime, it was never published in England. 7.75'' x 5.25''. Original gilt-stamped blue publisher's cloth binding. Original pink pictorial dust jacket. Illustrated with full-page black-and-white frontispiece with 12 full-page black-and-white plates. 154 pages. Bookseller's label to lower front pastedown, "Mr. Cooper Milliken/ 14 Oak Street/ Old Town Maine." Jacket with sunning to spine and rear top edge, some tape repairs to verso and a couple small chips (one affecting "Si" in the spine title). to edges. Book unusually bright and sharp. Near fine in very good dust jacket.

Spine titles faded, but otherwise a very good copy. FIRST EDITION. SECOND ISSUE. Illustrated 13 whole paqe black and white drawings, including frontispiece. The last book to be both written and published in the lifetime of Beatrix Potter (1866-1943). It is a a version of the story of Bluebeard, the legendary French wife-killing nobleman, the heroine of the title being the sister of Bluebeard's last wife. It was originally planned to form part of her previous book, The Fairy Caravan, but that title would have become too long. Both were published in the US in 1929 and 1932 but Sister Anne, unlike it's predecessor, was never later published in the UK. The author felt unable to illustrate the work herself, so this was carried out by Katherine Sturges (1890-1979), US writer and illustrator. This copy is the second issue of the first edition, having the frontispiece restored to its correct position from opposite p.7. A scarce title. FICTION CHILDREN'S LIT.
