Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. First British Edition. Delightful literary & artistic expedition based on the tragic death, in 1747, of Horace Walpole's cat, Selima, & the resultant poem that made her immortal, "Ode on the Death of a Favourite cat, Drowned in a Tub of Gold Fishes" by Thomas Gray. A book of "charm & erudition lightly worn, that adds seriously to our appreciation & enjoyment of eighteenth-century manners & our understanding of people & their household animals." Illustrated with three sets of designs inspired by the poem: R. Bentley's Rococo Gothic images (1753), W. Blake's watercolors (1797); & K. Hale's never-published drawings (1944). In 80 pages with 32 illustrations, 15 in full color, this large hardcover quarto (10" x 12.5") has decorative marbled paper over boards with a solid gray paper-covered spine lettered in blue. Condition is Fine: as clean & bright as when new! Binding strong & straight, pages white with no tanning or foxing.Small area of paper residue from old sticker to ffep. The unclipped DJ is Near Fine, downgraded solely due to some teeny chips at both ends of spine; nicely protected in new clear mylar cover. Our photos depict the Exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have! Same Day Shipping on all orders received by 2 pm Weekdays (Pacific time); later orders, weekends & holidays ship very next business day. SORRY: book is too large for expedited domestic or any international shipping without preapproval of extra postage (at least double per USPS rates). Condizione: Very Good. 2pp letter dated 27/4/91 is to 'Vera', i.e. Vera Russell nee Poliakoff, [1911-1992], actress and an important figure in the post-war British art scene. She was married, for several years to the art critic, John Russell [1919-2008]. Hale writes about the ballet based on her book 'Orlando's Silver Wedding' the music for which was done by the Australian composer, Arthur Benjamin [1897-1960]. Aggiungi al carrelloFIRST EDITION, each of the 36 poems with line-drawn illustration to facing recto by Kathleen Hale, the odd very faint spot to margin, pp. vi, 73, crown 8vo, original mid blue cloth, lettered in black to upper board, slight mustiness to cloth, dustjacket with Kathleen Hale illustration to front, browned to backstrip panel and borders, a little chipped with some horizontal cracking to backstrip panel, very good. The author, this her first book, later established herself as a clinical psychologist in the US, but her first few decades were spent in England - including a spell in Cambridge as assistant to C.K. Ogden. It is charming work, in the vein of A.A. Milne's humorous verse - its poem in Acknowledgement, professes deference to Christopher Robin in this regard. The volume is notable for featuring the first book-illustration work (excluding cover-designs) by Kathleen Hale, then at London's Central School of Arts and Crafts; different in style to her Orlando books, it does feature numerous cats, as well as lions, dogs, a winged horse, etc. …
