Untersucht werden die Verhandlung unterschiedlicher Diskurse und Konzeptionen von Glück und dem guten Leben (v.a. des utilitaristischen Glücksstrebens, der Selbstsorge und der Eudämonie, aber auch religiöser, spiritueller und folkloristischer Konzeptionen von Glück) in englischen Romanen im Kontext von Geschlechterdifferenz und Postkolonialismus. Glück erscheint hierbei nicht als feststehende Konzeption, vielmehr basiert seine Darstellung auf hermeneutischen Praktiken des Erzählens, Deutens und Bewertens von Lebensgeschichten, die kontingente Sinnzusammenhänge zwischen Ereignissen der Handlung sowie vorläufige, kontingente Bewertungen von Ereignissen, Erfahrungen, Lebensweisen, Bedürfnissen, Weltanschauungen und gesellschaftlichen Strukturen erzeugen und Leser zur eigenen Bewertung und Deutung literarischer Lebensgeschichten anregen.
