(Hollandse studiën, 33). - Pas in 1517, bijna 50 jaar nadat de eerste Noordnederlandse persen in werking waren gesteld, vestigde zich in Den Haag een drukker: Hugo Janszoon van Woerden. Lange tijd bleef het aantal drukkers en boekverkopers er laag en was er geen sprake van een georganiseerde beroepsgroep. Pas toen het Hof van Holland en de Rekenkamer in 1577 terugkeerden naar Den Haag, nadat zij tijdens de Opstand hun toevlucht hadden gezocht in Delft, en de Staten van Holland (1578) en de Staten-Generaal (1585) zich er eveneens vestigden, ontstond een grotere behoefte aan drukkers en boekverkopers. Bovendien moedigde de vestiging van belangrijke personen als landsdrukker Aelbrecht Heyndriksz., plaatsnijder en -uitgever Hendrik Hondius en veilinghouder Louis Elsevier ook andere drukkers/ boekverkopers aan in de hofstad fortuin te zoeken. In het eerste kwart van de zeventiende eeuw waren meer personen actief in het Haagse boekbedrijf dan in de gehele voorgaande eeuw. Marika Keblusek geeft een gedetailleerde beschrijving van het Haagse boekbedrijf in de periode 1625-1650: de namen van alle betrokkenen, de plaatsen waar de boeken gedrukt en/of verkocht werden, het veilingwezen, de organisatie en regulering van het boekbedrijf, het St. Lucasgilde, de censuur, de auteurs en 'nieuwsmakelaars', de rol van buitenlandse ballingen, de klanten, de aard en inhoud van het Haagse drukwerk en de rol van het boek aan het stadhouderlijk hof.
