Black boards and spine; slender fraying/wear at spine ends and at board corners; front board's gilt stamping remains bright. All edges gilt. Slight toning and soiling to endpapers; some occasional fingerprint soiling but otherwise interior pages are clean. Binding stressed between pages 2-3 but otherwise is firm. Still a very attractive copy of a book that tends not to age well. Although with no markings as such, the book was acquired from the estate collection of Dr. Edward Lee Dorsett (1883-1967) whose father, Dr. Walter Blackburn Dorsett (1852-1915) is pictured on page 170. No publication date specified but OCLC indicates 1903. OCLC locates copies at only fourteen member institutions. Features 506 b/w caricature illustrations of St. Louis, Missouri's leading citizens, businessmen, attorneys, doctors, etc. by seven staff cartoonists of the Joseph Pulitzer-owned St. Louis Post-Dispatch (although the introductory essay "Exordium" cites the "Daily Press" which likely a reference to the journalism profession en masse). The caricature portraits are all fairly flattering and highlight the individual's cranial appearance in conjunction with elements of their profession; undoubtedly most if not all of the subjects paid to be included in what was more-or-less a "Who's Who" among the ever-growing midwestern metropolis.
