Er fotografierte viele der wichtigsten Aufträge von Life während der Zeit der größten kulturellen Wirkung des Magazins; Clarks Bilder trugen dazu bei, das Selbst- und Weltgefühl einer Nation zu formen. Zu seinem breiten Themenspektrum gehören die Nürnberger Kriegsverbrecherprozesse, der Bürgerrechtskonflikt in den späten 1940er und frühen 50er Jahren, Hollywood-Stars und die Filmindustrie der 50er Jahre, die Menschen und Künste der Sowjetunion und das Weiße Haus während der Eisenhower- und Kennedy-Regierung.
