Original Black Hardback. Condizione: Very Good Plus. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good Plus. First Edition. 1998. 160pp. Foreword by William Baillie. Colour and a few b&w illustrations. PLEASE NOTE - This is a heavy book and extra postage is required for non-UK customers. "William Gillies (1898-1973) is Scotland's best-loved l…andscape painter of the twentieth century. Ironically, he was trained to paint the figure and still life in the best traditions of a Scottish art college education, and there was even a time when he thought of becoming a portrait painter. However, it is due to his way of seeing landscape that many people see the Scottish countryside today through his eyes. This book assesses Gillies's work from his schoolboy days in Haddington to his retirement years in the village of Temple. As a young artist, he came under the influence of Cubism, as did many British artists of his generation. Each chapter contains new insights into Gillies's painting, placing him firmly in the context of twentieth-century British painting. The private side of the artist's life is explored as well, the closeness of his family life being illustrated through many previously unpublished black and white archive photographs drawn from the Gillies family albums. The artist's bequest of several hundred paintings and drawings to the Royal Scottish Academy forms the core of the illustrations in this book. Many of the oil paintings have not been seen since they were first exhibited in the 1920s and 1930s. The book also draws upon a vast collection of postcards written by the artist to members of his family, and newspaper clippings that are also part of the RSA's archives. This beautiful and informative book also contains an extensive chronology of the artist's life, listing many of the locations of the painting trips around Scotland from which he gained the inspiration to paint the landscapes for which he is best known today. With over 100 full-color plates, this beautiful monograph of one of Scotland's most beloved twentieth-century painters is the first major publication about his work. Written by two of the great Gillies experts, the result is a fascinating and eye-opening book that reveals the breadth and quality of Gillies's painting.". William Gillies (illustratore).

Aggiungi al carrelloCloth. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. First edition. A lovely uncommon hardcover first edition copy of Joanna Soden and Victoria Kellar's study of the works and life of the renowned Scottish landscape and still life painter, William Gillies. This monograph provides a coherent and fascinating introduction…to Gillies's works, ideas, and affiliations, creating a complex portrait of the artist. The work is primarily separated into four distinct sections, examining: 'the Life and Times of the Artist', Gillies' works on the human figure, his still life works, and finally his landscapes. As the curators of the travelling Royal Scottish academy exhibition 'William Gillies: A Sense of Place' for 1998-99 and the international exhibition 'William Gillies: A Centenary Celebration', Victoria Kellar and Joanna Soden provide an authoritative voice on the life and works of the artist. The notable art historians, curator, and authors here demonstrate their wealth of knowledge on particular paintings, interweaving such information with the fascinating life story of Gillies. Complete with the publisher's original unclipped dustwrapper. Copiously illustrated throughout with color and monochromatic reproductions of the works of the Scottish artist. In a cloth binding with original unclipped dustwrapper. Externally, lovely, with very faint handling marks to boards. Very slightly rubbed to extremities. Internally firmly bound.
