Les multiples contacts linguistiques qui se sont opérés dans cet espace, et pas seulement entre Grecs et Latins, nous sont conservés par des traces et des témoignages écrits ; lesquels constituent en quelque sorte la partie émergée d'un iceberg. Les plus significatifs de ces témoignages sont naturellement les inscriptions bilingues ou, de manière plus générale, les sources attestant un bilinguisme. Les transferts linguistiques que l'on peut percevoir sont le plus souvent orientés : le plus puissant imposant au peuple soumis sa langue, son écriture, à moins que celui-ci n'y recoure de lui-même. Une autre option est l'appropriation, par le biais de la traduction. Le monde romain présente une mutation cruciale : par le même mouvement il s'est nourri du grec, langue et culture confondues, et a élaboré une doctrine pour recueillir cet héritage. Les transpositions et adaptations de modèles littéraires qui ont produit ce qu'il convient d'appeler une littérature gréco-romaine ont entraîné à partir de Cicéron une réflexion sur les finalités et les méthodes de la traduction. Le bouleversement produit par le développement du christianisme dans le monde occidental a conduit à un renversement, la fidélité à la source devenant le maître mot de la traduction. On voit aussi par là que la transmission s'inscrit dans une dimension temporelle: les textes et leur support linguistique se transmettent de génération en génération dans un certain cadre, voire avec une certaine finalité. Les motifs littéraires et les doctrines philosophiques se modifient, se contaminent. Les grammairiens perpétuent une conception de la langue et véhiculent les textes antérieurs, les sauvant parfois de l'oubli. Le présent ouvrage aborde ces questions sous différents angles: chaque étude offre une facette différente de la précédente, mais chacune réfléchit lautre.
