Aggiungi al carrelloHardback. Condizione: Very Good. Sunday's Kitchen explores life behind-the-scenes at Heide, the celebrated haven for progressive modernist artists and writers. Heide was the home and personal Eden of John and Sunday Reed, two of Australia's most significant art benefactors. Settling on the fifteen-acre property in outer Melbourne in 1935, the Reeds transformed it from a run-down dairy farm into a fertile creative space. They extended their hospitality and resources to now-famous artists such as Sidney Nolan, Albert Tucker, Joy Hester and Charles Blackman, and developed a culture of collaboration, eclecticism and idealism that changed the course of Australian art. At the centre of activity was Sunday Reed, a passionate cook and gardener, who ensured the artists she championed received sustenance for the body, not just the mind. Drawing on her experiences in the south of France, her emphasis was on home-grown produce, seasonal cooking and a self-styled domestic aesthetic that became an inspirational model. Based on the reminiscences of friends and intimates, Sunday's Kitchen introduces the history of food and eating that went hand-in-hand with the living and loving at Heide. It is richly illustrated with art, photographs and recipes from Sunday's personal collection, revealing another dimension of Heide's complex and compelling story. When Sunday and John Reed purchased Heide, now the site of Heide Museum of Modern Art, it was a neglected former dairy farm. At the end of their lives, it was unique among Melbourne's parklands, densely forested with exotic and native flora, with a stunningly beautiful cottage-style kitchen garden the jewel in its crown. The Reeds moulded Heide into a personal Eden, connecting art with nature and creating a nourishing environment for the artists they championed - Sidney Nolan, Albert Tucker, Joy Hester, Charles Blackman and Mirka Mora among them.

Aggiungi al carrelloMelbourne : Heide Museum of Modern Art, 2020. Quarto, illustrated boards, pp. 168, illustrated. A fine copy. Book accompanying a solo exhibition at Heide, which was postponed due to COVID. 'This exibition marks the centenary of the birth of Joy Hester (1920-1960), acknowledged today as one of Australia is most original and compelling artists, whose distinctive personal vision and haunting imagery resonates strongly with contemporary audiences. Hester worked almost exclusively in brush and ink or watercolour to create potent expressions of the figure and face, using drawing as a vehicle to grasp the complexity of the human condition. Described by her close friend Barbara Blackman as 'an amazing, abundant, reckless, irreverent consumer and creator of life', she explored the myriad ways we respond to experiences and the world around us, revealing our vulnerabilities and strengths. Her intuitive aesthetic, graphic intensity and manifestly female subjectivity saw her work dismissed in her lifetime by critics as too emotional and personal, yet it resonates strongly with contemporary audiences. The publication includes an introduction to Hester's work and overview of the exhibition and its themes by curator Kendrah Morgan which traces Hester's creative trajectory, from early figure studies and formative depictions of transitory city life, to her powerful responses to the oppressive climate of war, her psychological portraits and later, authentic investigations of human intimacy and childhood. This is followed by an essay by renowned drawing specialist Deanna Petherbridge which discusses in depth Hester's unnerving trope of 'disparate eyes' and puts forward a theoretical and propositional framework for interpreting her art in terms of European Surrealism and the concepts expounded by some of its key proponents.
