Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. Original gilt-titled dark brown cloth with Farsi script to the front 16x21cm. Printed by The Riverside Press, Edinburgh. 231 + (4)pp unindexed full-page b/w drawings accredited to an anonymous "friend who shared with me many happy days in Persia". Covers very good, marked to the cloth, rubbed to the extremities, interiors near fine. Inscribed by the author to the front blank: "My dear L.O. / I hope you will accept this book in memory of old days in Persia and as a small token of my gratitude, still very much alive, for all that you did for me in Tehran. / C.K. / Claridges. June 1927". "L.O." was apparently Lancelot Oliphant (1881-1965), Third Secretary at the British Embassy in Tehran during March 1909 to October 1911, who would later be remembered as "the diplomat who said 'No' to Saudi oil". They would have met in Tehran in 1909 when the Foreign Office transferred Kennard there as Attache and Third Secretary. This was apparently to distance him from Edith Cornelia Buckley, who was divorcing her husband James Frances Buckley, so they could marry. In Tehran, Kennard fell in love with, and subsequently married Dorothy Katherine Barclay, daughter of the Ambassador Sir George Head Barclay. When Buckley travelled to Tehran, Kennard initially refused to see her. They finally met in March 1910. Oliphant, who was witness to the meeting, describes Buckley as throwing herself to the ground in despair before a departing Kennard stated that he had proof that Buckley was attempting to con him, and would be taking legal action against her husband. Buckley informed Oliphant in tones of "undying devotion" that "It will be proven I am innocent". Lady Barclay had her removed from Persia. At a less frenetic pace, this work presents a poetic, sensuous account of the author's journey from Tehran to Nushki in Baluchistan during 29 March to 19 June. Upon setting out, Kennard expresses gratitude to his Persian language teacher Mirza Naim, and his journey takes him via Isfahan, Yezd, Kerman, Bam, and the Lut Desert into Baluchistan. It was written over several years, with the final page dated 1914-27. Wolesley Haig, who had spent much of his late professional life in Persia, praised Kennard for evoking "the joy of Persian travel" in a way that is "discursive, curious, introspective, and intermittently observant --- The author has a sense of beauty, and the hashish-bred dream of Isfahan transcends the reality but by a little, and merely restores faded glories". Paris: No. 13 of 380 copies, poems finely printed all in English, on Johannot paper; small loss and tears to spine ends; cream wrappers slightly used, moderately worn and marked. Internally clean and tight, about near VG overall. Kennard, a wealthy diplomat, known for his good looks and something of a dandy-- his mother was in Oscar Wilde's circle (she financed the Epstein memorial for him at Pre Lachaise cemetery in Paris). He was a great friend of Ronald Firbank and Vyvyan Holland. A number of the poems are erotic and some quite homoerotic. It has been suggested that the book is a spoof 'created by a third party, to denigrate Kennard or bring amusement to others'. Sme wear otherwise near very good.…
