Aggiungi al carrelloFirst edition in English of this report on the Second Congress of the Communist International. Octavo, original wrappers, from Petrograd and Moscow July 19 - August 7, 1920. Containing Vladimir Lenin's speech responding to John Maynard Keynes' article "The Economic Consequences of the Peace" on pages 19 -23. John Maynard Keynes was a British economist, whose ideas fundamentally changed the theory of macroeconomics and the economic policies of governments. Originally trained in mathematics, he built on and greatly refined earlier work on the causes of business cycles, and was one of the most influential economists of the 20th century. In very good condition. The Second Congress of the Communist International, held in Petrograd and Moscow in Julyâ"August 1920, was a formative event in the development of international communism following the Russian Revolution. Convened under the leadership of Vladimir Lenin, the congress sought to define the ideological, organizational, and strategic principles of the Comintern, most notably through the adoption of the Twenty-One Conditions, which set strict requirements for membership and emphasized discipline, centralization, and revolutionary commitment. Bringing together delegates from Europe, Asia, and the Americas, the congress clarified the Cominternâs break with reformist socialism and articulated a vision of coordinated global revolution shaped by Marxistâ"Leninist doctrine and the political realities of the postâ"First World War period.…

Aggiungi al carrelloFirst edition, separate and reprinted from the June 1946 issue of "The Economic Journal" containing Keynes' posthumously printed article: The Balance of Payments of the United States. Octavo, original wrappers. In very good condition, inscription to the first page. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, Keynes spearheaded a revolution in economic thinking, challenging the ideas of neoclassical economics that held that free markets would, in the short to medium term, automatically provide full employment, as long as workers were flexible in their wage demands. He argued that aggregate demand (total spending in the economy) determined the overall level of economic activity, and that inadequate aggregate demand could lead to prolonged periods of high unemployment, and since wages and labor costs are rigid downwards the economy will not automatically rebound to full employment. Keynes advocated the use of fiscal and monetary policies to mitigate the adverse effects of economic recessions and depressions. He detailed these ideas in his magnum opus, The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money, published in late 1936. By the late 1930s, leading Western economies had begun adopting Keynes's policy recommendations. Almost all capitalist governments had done so by the end of the two decades following Keynes's death in 1946.…

Aggiungi al carrelloRare first edition of this wartime work by Keynes. Octavo, original boards. In very good condition. Uncommon in this condition. In How to Pay for the War, John Maynard Keynes describes a macroeconomic strategy of how Britain, a nation with a population at the time of 40 million people, could conduct a long war against Germany, a nation of 80 million. At the time How to Pay for the War was written, neither the United States nor the Soviet Union were at war with either Germany or Japan. As a result, the first step for Britain to effectively conduct a war against Germany was to mobilize all its resources for production. Thus, the first two chapters of How to Pay for the War, are an argument for the need for full employment and chapter 3, Our Output Capacity and The National Income, is a manual to achieve full employment.…

Aggiungi al carrelloFirst edition of this work by one of the greatest economists of the twentieth century. Octavo, original wrappers. In good condition with chipping and a closed tear to the front panel. Laissez-Faire and Communism by John Maynard Keynes is a concise collection of essays in which Keynes critiques both unregulated capitalism and centralized communist systems, arguing for a more balanced and pragmatic approach to economic organization. Rejecting the inefficiencies and inequalities of pure laissez-faire as well as the rigidity of state-controlled economies, Keynes advocates for a mixed system in which government intervention can promote stability, employment, and social welfare while preserving individual initiative. The work reflects his broader effort to redefine economic policy in the interwar period, laying intellectual groundwork for the development of modern Keynesian economics.…

Aggiungi al carrelloFirst edition of Keynes' classic work. Octavo, half cloth with paper titles to the spine. In very good condition with toning to the panels and paper titles. In The End of Laissez-Faire, Keynes presents a brief historical review of laissez-faire economic policy. Though he agrees in principle that the marketplace should be free of government interference, he suggests that government can play a constructive role in protecting individuals from the worst harms of capitalism's cycles, especially as concerns unemployment. When the Great Depression struck a few years later, this work seemed very prescient. Keynes first earned widespread prominence immediately following World War I, when he published The Economic Consequences of the Peace. This book gained a good deal of notoriety because of its withering portraits of both French premier Georges Clemenceau and US president Woodrow Wilson. Keynes criticized the Allied victors for signing a treaty that would have ruinous consequences for Europe, if not modified as he suggested. Unfortunately, few leaders appreciated Keynes's criticisms, and he saw his worst fears realized in the rise of Hitler and the devastation of World War II.…

Aggiungi al carrelloFirst American edition of the best-selling book that established John Maynard Keynes' reputation as a leading economist. Octavo, original blue cloth with gilt titles and ruling to the spine. From the library of Fannie Hurst with her bookplate to the front pastedown. Fannie Hurst (1885â"1968) was a novelist, short story writer, and social activist whose work often addressed issues of gender, class, and race in early twentieth-century society. A highly popular and commercially successful author, she is best known for works such as Imitation of Life (1933), which explored racial identity and social inequality and was later adapted into influential films. Beyond her literary career, Hurst was actively engaged in public service and reform, serving on various government commissions during the New Deal and as a delegate to the U.N. World Health Assembly in 1937. In very good condition with wonderful provenance. The Economic Consequences of the Peace was written after Keynes attended the Versailles Conference as a delegate of the British Treasury and argued for a much more generous peace. It was a best-seller throughout the world and was critical in establishing a general opinion that the Versailles Treaty was a "Carthaginian peace". It helped to consolidate American public opinion against the treaty and involvement in the League of Nations. The perception by much of the British public that Germany had been treated unfairly in turn was a crucial factor in public support for appeasement. The success of the book established Keynes' reputation as a leading economist. When Keynes was a key player in establishing the Bretton Woods system in 1944, he remembered the lessons from Versailles as well as the Great Depression. The Marshall Plan after Second World War is a similar system to that proposed by Keynes in The Economic Consequences of the Peace. "The most important economic document relating to World War I and its aftermath" (John Kenneth Galbraith).…

Ownership signature to the front free endpaper. Accompanied by an autograph note signed by Keynes on a personal postcard with his Gordon Square address and dated June 30, 1923. The note reads in full, "I am sorry that I had to refuse St. Albans. But I don't very often make speeches, preferring to write. JM Keynes." In near fine condition with old mounting marks and light toning. "In 1930, Keynes brought out his heavy, two-volume Treatise on Money, which effectively set out his Wicksellian theory of the credit cycle. In it, the rudiments of a liquidity preference theory of interest are laid out and Keynes believed it would be his magnum opus[however, criticism was swift and extreme] and the Treatise led to the formation of a reading group, known as 'the circus,' composed of young Cambridge economists Richard Kahn and others Kahn dutifully delivered reports of the Circus's discussions to Keynes, who subsequently began revising his ideas. One resulting criticism of the Treatise was that it failed to provide a theory of the determination of output and employment as a whole a particular pertinent question given the huge amount of unemployment at the time" (History of Economic Thought).…

Octavo, original blue cloth with gilt titles to the spine. From the library of Hugh Lancelot Beales with his ownership signature to the front free endpaper. Hugh Lancelot Beales (1889â"1988) was a British economic historian and lecturer at the London School of Economics, noted for his work on nineteenth-century social and economic history. His scholarship, including works such as The Industrial Revolution 1750â"1850 (1928) and The Early English Socialists (1933), examined the social consequences of industrialization and economic change, while his role as a broadcaster and editor for Pelican Books reflected his commitment to making historical knowledge accessible to a wider public audience. In very good condition. Accompanied by an autograph letter signed to Beales from A.M. DaKyns, a lecturer for the Workers' Educational Association, laid in. "To those who wish to seek early indications of the theories that were later to appear in the General Theory, the Tract is the most rewarding source. Octavo, original blue cloth with gilt titles and ruling to the spine. Very good in a good dust jacket with tears to the flap hinges and a loss of the spine of the dust jacket. Octavo, original brown cloth with titles to the spine in gilt. From the library of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Benjamin Cardozo with his bookplate to the front pastedown. Benjamin N. Cardozo (1870â"1938) was an influential American jurist who served as an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1932 until his death in 1938, following a distinguished tenure as Chief Judge of the New York Court of Appeals. Appointed to the Supreme Court by President Herbert Hoover, Cardozo became renowned for his clear prose and thoughtful approach to legal reasoning, particularly in areas such as tort law, contracts, and judicial philosophy. His opinions and scholarly writingsâ"including The Nature of the Judicial Process (1921)â"emphasized the evolving character of the law and the role of judges in interpreting legal principles within changing social contexts. In very good condition with spotting to the spine and extremities. An exceptional association. In 1999, Time magazine included Keynes in their list of the 100 most important and influential people of the 20th century, commenting that: "His radical idea that governments should spend money they don't have may have saved capitalism." In addition to being an economist, Keynes was also a civil servant, a director of the British Eugenics Society, a director of the Bank of England, a patron of the arts and an art collector, a part of the Bloomsbury Group of intellectuals, an advisor to several charitable trusts, a writer, a philosopher, a private investor, and a farmer. …

Octavo, original blue cloth with gilt titles and ruling to the spine. Inscribed by John Neville Keynes on the front pastedown, "Dec. 1919 (from J.N.K.)." John Neville Keynes, was an English economist and philosopher best known for his influential work in economic methodology, particularly The Scope and Method of Political Economy (1891), which helped clarify the distinction between positive and normative economics. A longtime administrator and lecturer at the University of Cambridge, he played a formative intellectual role in shaping the academic environment in which his son, economist John Maynard Keynes, developed, while also contributing independently to debates on logic, probability, and the philosophical foundations of economic science. In very good condition. The Economic Consequences of the Peace was written after Keynes attended the Versailles Conference as a delegate of the British Treasury and argued for a much more generous peace.
