First edition, octavo, yellow cloth boards with black lettering to spine, vii + 207pp, illus, VG (some foxing & tanning to page edges, light soiling to board upper edges, light bruising to spine extrems) in d/w, VG (v slight tanning to spine & corners).

Vg/Vg (clipped dj fully enclosed inside a loose-fitting plastic sleeve. tiny sticker to reverse of front board. textblock edges are foxed, but nothinginternally.

Eight pen and ink drawings published in the 1963 edition of The Heroes on pp. 169, 68, 49, 113, 105, 37, and as the title on the spine of the binding. Subjects includes Hercules, Heracles and Hylas, the Golden Fleece, Medusa, Butes and the Sirens, and Perseus with Andromeda. The published book was part of "Dent's Children's Illustrated Classics" series. Joan Kiddell-Monroe (1908-1972) studied at Willesden and Chelsea Schools of Art. Most of her book illustration work was done after 1940. Her typical subjects were animals, and life and animals in Africa. Her archive is located at the University of Minnesota, which includes six ink and watercolour studies for the present book. Four of the illustrations carry a date of 17 September 1935, and therefore these drawings are from an early part of the artist's career, although published almost three decades later. Pen and ink drawings (65 x 85 mm, 75 x 36 mm, 70 x 77 mm, 86 x 68 mm, 88 x 88 mm, 68 x 133 mm, 58 x 136 mm, and 86 x 142 mm) on individual sections of artist's board. Drawn in ink, all but two signed with initials ("K-M"). Together with a copy of the published book, in dust jacket. Mounted together (430 x 468 mm).
