À la fin des années 1970 et au début des années 1980, alors que tout se met en branle, que lexpressionnisme abstrait, le minimalisme et le color field painting perdent leur formalisme, il parvient comme personne à transposer des thèmes tels que référentialité, figuration, matérialité authentique et corporalité, voire des moments du décoratif et pictural. Les peintures solidement travaillées et les objets réalisés avec soin des années 1960 étaient alors formellement bons pour le rebut, on assiste à un retour de styles et de matériaux qui souvrent aux artistes comme autant de sources historiques et artistiques, mais suscitent aussi de nouveaux contenus artistiques à travers la peinture New Image, les motifs et les décorations. Pour résumer, labstraction telle que Jonathan Lasker la voyait et savait la mettre en application était arrivée au post-moderne. Eva Berendes work…s in painting as an expanded field of production. She extends the medium to include sculptures and public spaces. This artistic methodology not only allows her to question the means of image production, but also to skillfully integrate their basis into a dialog with architecture, urban infrastructure or everyday objects. She uses various fabrics, painted and also unprocessed, as shown in the artists book at hand, which she then cuts and joins together with rough stitching, or by draping them on top of one another and fixing them with ball head pins. These kinds of amalgamations by Eva Berendes have already been on display in Bonn as objects in front of the Kunstmuseum. At the time she was awarded the Bonner Kunstpreis 2021 and presented her works as architectural fragments or parts of facades in both interior and outdoor settings. Birgit Werres findet ihre Materialien auf Lagerplätzen und Produktionsstandorten der Industrie, deren ständiger Gast sie ist. Dort stößt sie auf die Dinge, die ihr ästhetisches Interesse wecken. Ihre Wahrnehmung ist über viele Jahre geschult; ihr Akademiestudium hatte sie zunächst zu Tony Cragg geführt, bevor sie es bei Irmin Kamp abschloss. Ihre Umwidmung der profanen Gegenständlichkeit vollzieht sie in Reihungen, Schichtungen oder Materialverbünden. In solchen Arbeiten führt die Künstlerin immer wieder formale Charakteristika wie Volumen, Textur oder Struktur fort. Eine herausragende Rolle spielt dabei oft auch die signalhafte Eigenfarbigkeit der verwendeten Materialien. Diese läuft häufig der monumentalen Körperlichkeit der Objekte zuwider und verrätselt Herkunft, Funktion und Eigenschaften des Materials zusätzlich. Für ihre unkonventionellen Skulpturen und Installationen werden gerne als Referenz Kollegen von Robert Smithson, Barry Le Va, Richard Artschwager bis Richard Serra aufgerufen. Die Effekte liegen zwischen bombastischen Views, interstellaren Räumen oder kindlich wirkendem Gesudel. Anders gesagt, die im Scan festgehaltenen ephemeren Bilder machen neugierig auf die industriell gefertigten Produkte, mit denen wir jeden Tag Umgang haben, die zudem perfekt auf jede Lebenssituation zugeschnitten sind und über deren Inhaltsstoffe und Herstellungsprozess wir im Grunde wenig wissen.
