Boards have rubs, crease across front, corners rubbed through and cloth is fraying, spine is covered with blue binding tape and library numbers are written in white ink on tape. 2.5" tear on top edge of title page. Pages have corner creases, smudges and some stains. Text is clear. Binding is slightly cocked.

Fascinating tales gathered from the Eskimo who make their homes along the Arctic coast and rivers of the Seward Peninsula. This literature is oral and meant to be narrated by tribal historians who employ much action, imitation of voices and lengthy description, so they lose some of their value and force in written form. Still fascinating, each tale is illustrated in b/w drawings. 122 pp.

Cloth very lightly marked; an excellent copy without a dustwrapper (presumably one was issued). Limited to 3000 copies; this copy has the 1945 ownership signature of Charles P. Mountford, the noted Australian anthropologist. Loosely inserted is a newspaper clipping recording the 100th birthday of Mountford's wife Bessie in November 1990 (she accompanied Mountford on his 1948 Arnhem Land expedition and others).

Records indicate 3000 copies printed in 1944, bottom of bastard title states "5000 September 1945". While no indication of a second printing was located, this clearly seems to be the case. Uncommon in any state, scarce with DJ. Light shelf/edge wear, ownership signature on ffep, else tight, bright, and unmarred; DJ shows moderate shelf/edge wear, chip at the head, a few small closed tears, very minor foxing, else bright and clean. Oblong tan cloth boards, silver gilt lettering, pictorial endpages. 122pp. Illus. (b/w plates). First Edition [Second Printing, presumed].
