The authors were associated with the Biology Branch of the Naval Radiological Defense Laboratory, located at the San Francisco Naval Shipyard. As a result of this research, it was apparent that the lethality of roentgen rays at the doses studied (600 r, 700 r, and 800 r) was increased by the repeated performance of vigorous exercise following irradiation. It was suggested that the increased mortality observed with animals exercised after irradiation provided additional evidence of the relation between radiosensitivity and metabolic level. The United States Naval Radiological Defense Laboratory (NRDL) was an early military lab created to study the effects of radiation and nuclear weapons. The facility was based at the Hunter's Point Naval Shipyard in San Francisco, California. The NRDL was formed in 1946 to manage testing, decontamination, and disposition of US Navy ships contaminated by the Operation Crossroads nuclear tests in the Pacific. A number of ships that survived the atomic detonations were towed to Hunter's Point for detailed study and decontamination. Some of the ships were cleaned and sold for scrap. Working with the newly formed US Atomic Energy Commission (predecessor to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission established in 1974), the Navy conducted a wide variety of radiation experiments on materials and animals at the lab, including the construction of a cyclotron on the site for use in radiation experiments and storage for various nuclear materials. Adult male rats were subjected to exhaustive exercise (swimming) following irradiation, and the lethality rate was determined. It is apparent that the lethality of roentgen rays at the doses studied (600r, 700r, 860r) is increased by the repeated performance of vigorous exercise following irradiation. It is suggested that the increased mortality observed with animals exercised after irradiation provides additional evidence that radiosensitivity is related to metabolic level. Table 1 includes information on total mortality for each dose level of x-rays delivered to the whole body; Figure 1 includes information on the effect of exhaustive exercise upon post-irradiation survival. Document also contains references.…

Table 7: Mean Weight of Experimental Groups in Percent of Base Weight; Dose: 700r; Table 8: Mean Weight of Experimental Groups in Percent of Base Weight; Dose; 860 r The performance of rats in a standardized exhaustive performance test was depressed following whole body irradiation with relatively lethal doses of x-rays (700 and 860 r). The extent of performance depression appears to be related to the post-irradiation survival time. The extent and rate of mortality following irradiation, with the doses described, were markedly increased by repeated periods of exercise in the post-irradiation interval. It is of interest to note that, even with highly lethal irradiation doses, weekly mean performance times were maintained for a period following irradiation. Summary: The performance of male rats was assayed in an exhaustive (swimming) performance test. Following x-irradiation in the lethal range for rats (700 r and 860 r) the performance ability of test animals was depressed. The extent of performance depression is proportional to the post-irradiation survival time of those animals which eventually died. fair (several notations on covers) soft cover, staple bound (some staples missing to front and rear covers) Presumed first issuance of Interim Report (Unclassified).…

Aggiungi al carrelloWraps. Condizione: Good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. 21 pages. Distribution. Tables. Figures. References. UNCLASSIFIED. Stamp on front page. Problem Assignment 6B14a NSO83-007. RARE. The ability of rats to perform standardized exhaustive swimming tests was decreased greatly to total body irradiation with 600r of x-rays. Animals which survived nine weeks or longer after irradiation regained their initial performance ability. The stress of repeated physical performance caused a 50 percent mortality among irradiated swimmers while 100 percent of the irradiated non-swimming animals survived. Some correlative alterations in body weight and test performance were analyzed. The first use of radioactive materials at NRDL predated the issuing of licenses by the Atomic Energy Commission, but the AEC later issued licenses for a broad spectrum of radioactive materials to be used in research at the NRDL. Radioactive materials specific to nuclear weapon testing were exempted from AEC licensing.…

Marked "Internal Use Only Not For External Distribution" Unclassified. Cover has stamps and markings. Donald J. Kimeldorf stamped on front cover--this was one of the author's copy. Stamp on page 1 also. Part 1 of this report describes a series of experiments in which partial-body exposure to doses of X rays from 200 to 500 r was used to study the previously reported X irradiation. In the study summarized in Part 2 of this report, post-irradiation administration of homologous bone marrow suspension was employed to test the hypothesis that the decrease in volitional activity performed during the 2nd and 3rd weeks related to a hematopoietic deficiency. It appears that hematopoietic injury is the mediating process involved in this performance decrement.…
