Illustrated by Japanese Artists; beautifully, in color throughout. 12mo, original crepe-paper covered boards illustrated in color, in publisher's blue cloth chemise with Japanese-style closure (one bone peg lacking). All three volumes are in good condition with rubbing to edges, mostly to head and tail of spine and corners; mild soiling. Slight fading to crepe paper, most noticeably on Volume III. All have tight bindings. Interiors are clean except for light toning. Each volume has a small sticker on rear endpaper. Housed in blue cloth slipcase in poor condition. Splitting at joints with complete separation along one of them; moderate soiling and toning. Unpaginated. No publication date or edition is printed. Aggiungi al carrelloA complete set, formed from later printings as often, of this attractive trilogy. Around 1910, having issued each beautiful volume individually, Hasegawa began marketing sets in a wraparound case, as here, compiling these from available stocks of different printings. The poems, composed in the short, unrhymed Chinese style, date from the 10th to the 19th centuries and are predominantly drawn from the famous Kokinshu poetry anthology. In Volume I, Hasegawa includes a three-page postscript discussing poetry's cultural and literary subtleties: "The Japanese are quick to take an artistic hint, and to them in poetry as in painting the half said thing is dearest. The words distinguished by capital letters in these Blossom Songs would to a Japanese reader be alone almost enough to indicate the meaning of the whole poem." This set comprises second printings of volumes II and III and a third printing of Volume I. 3 vols, small octavo. Colour woodblock illustrations throughout, after various Japanese artists such as Hokusai, Koho, Shoso, Gesso, and Yoshimune. Original illustrated crêpe paper-covered padded boards, front covers with title in white on brown panels. Housed in publisher's dark blue cloth wraparound case, bone toggles, spine panel lettered in white. Covers lightly sunned, brown marking on final 2 pages of Vol. II: a very good set in like case, with spots of wear and spine panels rather sunned.
