Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: As New. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Hardcover in bright red cloth with gilt spine lettering and Paladwr Press device, in the original pictorial dust jacket retaining the $30.00 printed price. Foreword and maps by noted airline historian R. E. G. Davies; edited by J. Scott-Mandeville; typesetting/layout by Spot Color. xi, 339 pp., extensively illustrated with historic photographs, advertisements, route maps, fleet information, statistics, and index. The Smithsonian Libraries catalogues the work at xi + 339 pages and specifically classifies it under Pacific Southwest Airlines history. Kissel was unusually well placed to write the story. As his jacket biography records, he joined PSA in 1968 as Director of Public Relations, six years after founder Kenneth Friedkin's death, and worked closely with subsequent senior management. The resulting history follows PSA from Friedkin's postwar beginnings through its colorful California growth, famous "smiling" aircraft and flight-attendant culture, expansion and deregulation, and eventual absorption into USAir. The book is much more substantial than a nostalgic pictorial: it includes eight specially prepared route maps, detailed fleet tables with registrations, manufacturer serial numbers, delivery dates and dispositions, financial/passenger statistics, and an extensive index. Its usefulness as a reference is borne out by the San Diego Air & Space Museum, which names Kissel's book among the published resources complementing its archival Pacific Southwest Airlines Collection. Like New / Near Fine dust jacket. Book is exceptionally fresh: bright, clean red cloth, crisp gilt, square boards, tight binding, and clean, bright pages with no observed ownership marks, writing, or significant wear. The original jacket remains bright and glossy with strong color and only very minor handling/edge wear, principally a small touch of wear/creasing at the upper rear corner; no significant chips or tears. An unusually attractive copy. The copyright page settles this very nicely: it explicitly states "Second Printing", copyright and publication 2002. There are two particularly nice collecting angles here. First, R. E. G. Davies (1921-2011) was considerably more than a contributor of a ceremonial foreword: he was one of the important historians of commercial aviation, and here he also supplied the route maps. The book's map section traces PSA's network from its 1949 pioneer route through the final 1988 network, while the appendices document individual aircraft down to registration and serial number. That makes this a useful reference work for airline and aircraft historians as well as a corporate history. Second, the book has become something of a source document for PSA history. The independent PSA History Page explicitly lists Kissel's book among its principal sources, while the San Diego Air & Space Museum cites it alongside its archival PSA collection. The Second Printing designation also tells us something useful bibliographically: Paladwr evidently returned the title to press, suggesting that the initial printing found enough of an audience among aviation enthusiasts to warrant another run. …

First edition, xi, 339 pp, black & white illustrations; original red cloth with gilt lettering to spine, in dustwrapper, in fine condition.
