Here, they are translated into English for the first time, but in such a way as to maintain the "humorous & colloquial style of the original," & brought to li…fe for new readers with the work of 2 Norwegian artists (Kittelsen & Werenskiold), with a Frontispiece by Carl Larsson, "the prince of Swedish illustrators." From 1901, in xi + 178 pages with a Translator's Note in front, ad for other fairy tale titles from this London publisher & reviews from the press in rear, this hardcover has rust-colored cloth over boards elaborately decorated & lettered in gilt & black to front & spine. Condition is Good: sewn binding is strong & straight, but loosening in places; Translator's Note page & 1 of the illustrated plates are completely detached. All pages generally clean with the occasional spot or smudge, but otherwise unmarked. All moderately tanned, with scattered foxing, heavier to endpapers. In addition to the Frontis, 20 illustrations are listed--there are actually more, but all these are present. Exterior shows staining, bleached lower-outer corner of front cover, & rubbing to extremities with fraying & a spot of loss at corners.
