First issued in 1848 by Cox. this is the large folio 14 by 11 inch re issue with the chromo color maps of the Holy Land and region. circa 1860. in fine con…dtiion, the original full gilt brown morocco binding is rubbed but solid and joints are tight. Profusely illustrated voluime to use on sundaypublished by The London Printing and Publishing Company, Limited, London and New York, in, I'm estimating, 1875. Kitto's inaugural Sunday Book was published in the late 1840's or early 1850's by Charles Knight & Co., London. This rather incredible edition could not, I'm surmising, have been published much before 1875, due to the relative quality of a SET OF 13 FULL COLOR, FULL PAGE MAPS, this 516-page, From Introduction, ".To produce a work adapted to Sunday Reading, which shall offer to the mind--and especially to the mind of the Young--the study of sacred subjects in an attractive form, and calculated to make the Word of God interesting to Youth,--is what the Publishers propose to themselves in the Sunday Book. Aware of the important aid which pictorial representation affords in the communication of instruction, and the power which it has of arresting and fixing the attention, they have prepared a series of Engravings, illustrative of the Bible History, the Prophecies, the Psalms, the Life of our Savior, and the Acts of His Apostles; exhibiting the scenes of the great events recorded in Scripture, the Customs of the Jews, the Natural History of the Holy Land, and the Antiquities which throw a light upon the Sacred Writings." Speaking of Engravings--there are at least 1,298 of same throughout this volume, in varying dimensions, including dozens of 5" X 7 1/4" Drawings that occupy their own full page. The first 415 pages, Part I, consist of a year-long series of 52 "sections", each of which expands upon the above-mentioned Bible History, Psalms, Life of Christ, etc. Part II, Geography of the Holy Land, details in five Chapters such aspects as "Mountains", "Geology and Mineralogy", and "Volcanic Indications and Earthquakes". Part III, Compendium of Scriptural Geography, is obviously intended to be read/digested in conjunction with the battery of W. Hughes' 13 maps of the Holy Land, from map No. I, "Armenia, Mesopotamia, Syria, and the Adjacent Countries in the Time of Abraham", to No. XIII, "Modern Palestine, with the Adjacent Part of Syria". Also included are an Index of Scriptural Geography (from Abana,River to Zuzims) and the, necessarily, extensive Index to the Engravings.
