Few subjects arouse more controversy than prison reform and few people were better qualified than the author, Secretary of the Howard League for Penal Reform, to write a penetrating and constructive book about the problems, the implications of which directly or indirectly touch the lives of all of us. This book was forthright and farseeing, intuitive and empirical, yet entirely and refreshingly free from the cant and false sentiment which too often coloured this subject. The author projects in this book his vision of the future for prisons, a vision which is compassionate and humane, and yet conceived in essentially practical terms. An attempt is made to analyse the way in which the pressure generated in a large maximum security prison may affect individuals and groups in it : prisoners, prison officers and specialist and directing staff. The author goes on to suggest how training methods, at the time, may have to be deepened and how new techniques, such as group discussion, group therapy and control of the balance of personalities within small groups of prisoners, may have to be used more widely. Finally, he suggests certain priorities outlining a possible controlled experiment in a small prison based on a system of group discussion. The author does not claim that his interpretation is necessarily the only one or that his proposals would transform the situation, but this stimulating book deserved the serious attention of everyone interested in one of the most important social problems of our time.
