Liebe ist etwas Unvollkommenes. Unvollkommen muß deshalb auch die…ses Buch bleiben. Vielleicht ist dennoch aus diesem Gefühl heraus etwas entstanden, was anderen Menschen diese Liebe weitergeben kann. Schlesien ist in seiner Begrenztheit zwischen der östlichen Ebene und Böhmen eine Welt für sich, die man nur unvollständig in diesem Rahmen erfassen kann. Der Schlesier, unruhig und in die Weite strebend, bleibt seinem Lande verbunden wie kaum ein zweiter Volksstamm Deutschlands. In aller Welt, bis nach Amerika und Israel, lebt die Sehnsucht nach dem leisen Rauschen der Oder, nach den hohen Bergwäldern und den stimmungsvollen Straßen der alten Städte. Viele Schlesier sind deshalb im Alter wieder zurückgekehrt wie Eichendorff oder Holtei, andere sind in der Fremde an ihrer Sehnsucht gestorben wie Max Herrmann-Neisse. Der Leser möge dieses kleine Lexikon als eine Anregung empfinden, sich mit Schlesien zu befassen, mit seinen Menschen, seinen Kunstdenkmälern, seinen Naturschönheiten. Sofern er selbst Schlesier ist, wird ihn das Studium vielleicht ein wenig mit Stolz erfüllen und ihm Mut geben, sich zu diesem Lande zu bekennen. Denn vieles ist bereits verlorengegangen, ein wenig aus Bequemlichkeit oder auch nur aus Not der Zeit nach dem Kriege, mehr vielleicht aus nichterkanntem politischem Opportunismus. Früher gab es im deutschen Reichstag über alle Parteien hinweg eine Fraktion der Schlesier. Fern ist diese Zeit. Und doch scheint es geboten; daß die Schlesier wieder enger zusammenfinden, sowohl die in Westdeutschland als auch jene aus Mitteldeutschland und nicht zuletzt die vielen, die in der alten Heimat weiterleben; sie haben es am schwersten. Den Leser, der etwas für ihn Wesentliches vermißt, bitte ich um Verständnis. Das Büchlein konnte nicht alles bringen. Zeit und Aufwand mußten in einem für den Verlag tragbaren Verhältnis gehalten werden. Allen, die durch tatkräftige Mithilfe zu der Entstehung und Gestaltung dieses Lexikons beigetragen haben, sei sehr herzlich gedankt.
