Danbom added in his "History of Rural America". Thus it may be argued that the study of American culture and civilizati…on, first and foremost, needs to make sense of the rural. This multidisciplinary volume focuses on rural America, on areas seemingly apart from the political, economic, and cultural centers of the nation. Despite this apparent marginality, the rural often proves to be constitutive not only of regional but also of other subnational and even national American identities. Putting rurality at the center thus problematizes the well-established dichotomous models of city vs. country. The 21 contributions to this volume address the rural as a mythic construction (e.g. as the American ?Heartland? and as the centerpiece of a US pastoral tradition), as a (socio-)economic sector, as an imaginary time-space within American culture, and as the site of specific political, social, and cultural practices with, at times, transnational/global implications. Die Fallstudien in diesem Band adressieren den digitalen Strukturwandel der OE…ffentlichkeit, die mediale Differenzierung und Pluralisierung oeffentlicher Raeume und damit verbundene aesthetische, ethische, institutionelle und politische Herausforderungen an die Produktion und Rezeption von Literatur. Anhand aktueller Beispiele werden mediale Vernetzungen von Literatur sowie die aesthetischen Moeglichkeiten und kulturellen Funktionen verschiedener Medien im Vergleich und in ihrem Zusammenspiel erkundet. Auch die Bedingungen des Literaturbetriebs werden zum Thema: Regulierungen der Teil-OEffentlichkeiten, die durch technische, organisatorische oder politische Entscheidungen vorgenommen werden und die im Hintergrund des Mediengeschehens die Produktion jedes veroeffentlichten Textes oder Bildes bestimmen. Gefragt wird aber vor allem nach der Rolle der Literatur fuer die Reflexion gesellschaftlich-politischer Fragen, zum Beispiel hinsichtlich der Bewertung unterschiedlicher Diskursformate, der Aufarbeitung historischen Unrechts sowie der Neubestimmung und Neugestaltung gesellschaftlicher Strukturen. Das Interesse des Bandes insgesamt gilt den Rollen literarischer Diskurse und des vielgestaltigen Literaturbetriebs fuer deliberative demokratische Prozesse.
