This volume presents a critical edition of Richard Knapwells Quaestio disputata de imitate formae, delivered at Oxford around 1285-86. The complete work is extant in Cod. Bologna 1539; roughly the first half of it is found in Cod. Vat. lat. 806. The present edition is based on both codices. Knapwell was one of the earliest supporters of the Thomist theological and philosophical innovations at Oxford. The Thomist interpretation of Aristotles hylomorphic theory, the so-called unity of form thesis, became the focal point of dispute at this time in the University, and it was on this issue that the defenders of Aquinas argued their case. While ecclesiastical authority in the persons of Robert Kilwardby and John Pecham avoided making as plain a connection as they might have between the unity thesis and Aquinas, William de la Mare did, in his famous Correctivutn fratris Thomae (1277-79). This work provoked at least three responses by English Dominicans, one of them, the Correctorium corruptorii Quare, by Knapwell. It is revealing to compare Knapwells presentation of the unity thesis in Quare with what he wrote later as a master in his quaestio. The former work shows us Knapwell the apologete who does little more than repeat the thought of Aquinas except where he borrows from his admired colleague Thomas Sutton. The Quare was not aimed directly at a position backed by Church authority; its target was the friar William de la Mare. John Pecham changed the context'of the debate when, in 1284, he renewed Kilwardbys 1277 condemnation; he was inspired to this by the flurry of pro-Thomist literature which had appeared in Oxford rebutting de la Mares correctivutn. After Pechams action, any continued defense of the unity thesis would no longer be a simple matter of dispute between friars; it would become a case of insubordination to Canterbury and high ecclesiastical authority. Undaunted by the archbishops order, Knapwell stood up and publicly defended the proscribed thesis.
