Anna Katharina Riedmeier, Tochter des Johann Jakob, aus Kundern (Preussen). Stud. der Rechtswissenschaften in Heidelberg (ohne Abschluss), 1838-40 Artillerie- und Ingenieurschule Berlin. 1840-50 Pionieroffizier in der preuss. Armee. Ab 1845 übte R. demokrat. Kritik an der preuss. Armee und propagierte das Volkswehrkonzept. 1847 beteiligte er sich in Königsberg an der Märzrevolution, wurde suspendiert und einem Militärgerichtsverfahren unterzogen, jedoch nicht verurteilt. Nach der Publikation der Schrift "Der dt. Militärstaat vor und während der Revolution" wurde er 1850 wegen Hochverrats und Majestätsbeleidigung zu 31,5 Jahren Festungshaft verurteilt und flüchtete in die Schweiz. Seine Tätigkeit als Militärwissenschaftler und -schriftsteller ab 1850 brachte ihm europaweit Ansehen. Zeitweise diente er als Instruktor kant. Milizen und als Militärexperte im Auftrag des Bunds. 1852-55 war er PD für Geschichte an der Univ. Zürich, 1875-76 Dozent für Kriegswissenschaften am Eidg. Polytechnikum. 1860 nahm er auf Werben von Emma Herwegh als Generalstabschef Giuseppe Garibaldis, dann als Kommandant des linken siegreichen Flügels der Südarmee am 2. ital. Befreiungskrieg teil und erhielt den Grad eines Oberstbrigadiers. 1870 wurde er Oberst des schweiz. Generalstabs und Chef der hist.-statist. Sektion des Armeestabs. R. übte wesentl. Einfluss auf die Armeereformbewegung der 1860er Jahre aus, die auf den zivilen Bildungsinstitutionen und Vereinen eine Milizarmee aufbauen wollte. Professionelle Sachkenntnis und eine krit. Sprache gehörten zu R.s Markenzeichen. Als er 1878 nicht definitiv auf den Lehrstuhl für Kriegswissenschaften am Eidg. Polytechnikum gewählt wurde, erschoss er sich. [Rudolf Jaun, HLS] 1100 gr. Hermann Köchly hatte 1846 mit Freunden den Dresdner Gymnasialverein gegründet, der "eine staunenswerte Tätigkeit entwickelte" (ADB). Der vorliegende Band enthält die Arbeitsberichte. Ziel war die Reform der höheren Bildung durch eine stärkere Berücksichtigung der Realien und des neusprachlichen Unterrichts, da die einseitige Ausrichtung auf die alten Sprachen zur kastenmäßigen Absonderung der Gebildeten geführt habe. "Nie aber wird (in Zukunft) die Gelehrtenschule vergessen, daß auch sie eine Volksschule ist, nie der Gelehrte vergessen, daß auch er zum Volke gehört, daß höher als aller Ruhm der Wissenschaft und gelehrten Forschung die Ehre des freien Bürgers steht" (Heft 2, S. VIII). Die Tätigkeit des Vereins ging nahtlos in die revolutionäre Bewegung von 1848 über, in der Köchly eine hervorragende Rolle spielte. Sprache: Deutsch.
