Turning Heads - Rubens, Rembrandt and Vermeer highlights a remarkable genre in painting to which little attention has so far been paid: tronies or study heads, which were intended first and foremost to depict an emotion or a character trait. Since the model's identity did not matter, painters could truly go to town with these heads. Tronies were drawn and painted by some of the greatest masters: Dürer, Bruegel, Massys, Rubens, Rembrandt and Vermeer, to name just a few. Turning Heads offers a fresh insight into a genre that is older and more varied than you might think. This book includes dozens of illustrations plus the thoughts of contemporary artists for whom the face is essential to their own work. Catalogue for the exhibition of the same name at the KMSKA in Antwerp (from October 20, 2023 to January 21, 2024) and the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin (from February 24 to May 26, 2024).

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. This book is the result of the international study day held on 6 December 2013 to celebrate the Rubenianum 50th anniversay. In 1963 a ship landed at the port of Antwerp carrying the specialized library and photo archive of the eminent Rubens scholar Ludwig Burchard. Ever since, the Rubenianum has been able to pride itself on this important legacy and to expand it in order to become the internationally renowned study centre for sixteenth- and seventeenth century Flemish art it is today. The proceedings aim to contextualize and to bring to light the man who stood at the beginning of the Rubenianum collection. What is his role within Rubens research? What characterizes the documentation he left us? How might he have operated when compared to his peers? Who was Ludwig Burchard? Proceedings of a conference held December 6, 2013 in Antwerp, marking the 50th anniversary of the Rubenianum. Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. The present volume of the Corpus Rubenianum catalogues Rubens's exploration and representation of the theme of the public life of Christ. The period in Christ's life during which he spread his message by wandering and preaching with the apostles in the Holy Land, offered a particularly poignant and important part of religious discourse within the context of the Counter-Reformation period in the Netherlands. In order to rebut the Calvinists and their call for the stripping of imagery and lavish decoration from churches, and the destruction of furniture and altarpieces that followed, the Roman Catholic Church sought to establish an innovative and powerful visual rhetoric with renewed urgency. The scenes from the ministry of Christ could serve as potent reminders of the core values of Roman Catholic spirituality. Rubens, as a devout Catholic, created a number of impressive paintings to express this, although most of the works he produced seem to have been intended for the open market. The works discussed span the entirety of Rubens's career and attest to the complexity of the iconographic division in which the depictions of Jesus Christ's public life were thought and created.
