Hardback. Condizione: Very good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fair. 14th, revised 1961. Willard D. Morgan was one of the pioneers in 35 millimeter photography in the United States and soon became one of the pioneers in photography publication when he created the publishing house of Morgan and Lester with Henry M. Lester in 1934. In 1935, their first book, "The Leica Manual," came out. By the time this version, "Leica Manual and Data Book," was released in 1962, it had gone through fourteen editions and had still another to go before the run was finished under the new publisher's name of Morgan and Morgan. The formula Willard D. Morgan, who acted as author as well as editor, used so successfully was to tap into the expertise of the fellow photographers amongst his friends and associates to help readers understand not only how to use Leica equipment specifically but how to successfully take 35 millimeter pictures and then process the film more generally. Sure, this Leica manual tells the readers such things as how to use the Leica lenses available at the time of publication in 1962, but it also tells them how to take advantage of available light when taking pictures outdoors, or how best to buy 35 millimeter filmtopics that the users of any brand of camera can find useful. This, the fourteenth edition, came out before so many of the steps used for taking pictures and then developing and printing the film became automated, so may be more helpful than the later edition for current collectors of antique cameras, since the technology had not made the radical changes over the previous thirty-five years that it would make over the next twenty. Another advantage this edition has over the last edition is its size. As comprehensive as this copy is for one learning film photography, it is not voluminous; at 8.5 by 5.5 inches, it's easy to tote around and use in the field. It is in very good condition, with a text block that is tight and straight and with no missing, torn, or loose pages. The binding hinges are sturdy and solid and the covers are only blemished by some minor bumping on the corners and top and bottom of the spine. The only marking within the book is the signature of a previous owner at the top right of the front end paper. Unusually, this copy comes with its original dust jacket. The dust jacket is rather battered, with a good bit of chipping along both the top and bottom edges, and two tears coming down from the top of the front of the jacket, one an inch and a half long and the other slightly more than an inch long. Still, the dust jacket is intact, even including the original price on the front flap. The edition information on the copyright page is somewhat curious: The copyright is officially 1962, but a note printed at the top of the pages says, "Fourteenth edition, revised, May 1961 - New Printing 1965." See our photos for details.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. RARE OLD BOOK: Brown Balloon Cloth with gold torchbearer leaping left on cover; Spine 7, with Kent Endpaper, 95 cents on front flap. Rare DJ: has 225 titles listed on inside; two chips on edges, one at top right corner; tanning on spine. STORY: A stylized retelling of ancient legends, was one of his earliest books, a foreshadowing of his later fascination with Asian themes. This collection of six stories reveals his deep fascination with the weird beauty of Chinese folk-tales; highly valued by experts. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Born in Greece to a Greek mother and an Irish father, a complex series of conflicts and events led to young Lafcadio Hearn being moved to Ireland, where he was abandoned first by his mother (leaving him in the care of her husband's aunt), then his father and finally by his father's aunt, who had been appointed his official guardian. At the age of 19 he was put on a boat to the United States, where he found a job as newspaper reporter, first in Cincinnati, Ohio, and later in New Orleans. From there he was sent as a correspondent, first to the French West Indies, where he stayed for two years, and then to Japan, where he would remain for the rest of his life.
