Oktober 1929 in Neuss) war ein deutscher Altertumsforscher und Provinzialrömischer Archäologe. 1875 begann Koenen, für den Bonner Verein von Altertumsfreunden im Rheinlande Ausgr…abungen durchzuführen, so auch im Bonner Legionslager. Diese Erfahrungen erhärteten seine Vermutung, das lang gesuchte Legionslager in seiner Heimatstadt Neuss habe sich bei Grimlinghausen befunden. Eine Versuchsgrabung Koenens erbrachte 1886 den Beweis dieser Annahme. Zwischen 1887 und 1900 wurde nun das Legionslager Neuss unter der örtlichen Leitung Koenens planmäßig aufgedeckt. 1904, vier Jahre nach Beendigung der Ausgrabungen, wurden die Ergebnisse veröffentlicht. 1899 ernannte ihn das Deutsche Archäologische Institut zum korrespondierenden Mitglied. Eine Versuchsgrabung Koenens erbrachte 1886 den Beweis dieser Annahme.
