He grew up during the Cultural Revolution (1966Ð1976), yet the beginnings of his artistic career coincided with the countryÕs political opening in the late 1970s and 1980s. He first gained prominence in Europe in 1989 through his participation in the groundbreaking exhibition 'Les Magiciens de la Terre' at the Centre Georges Pompidou in ParisÑan event that also prompted his emigration to the West. While YangÕs early work is characterized primarily by meditative, monochrome ink paintings, he began creating increasingly figurative paintings and videos from the late 1990s onwards. His work increasingly engaged with critical themes and real-world events. About fine. Signedes.
