Erstes deutsches Nachschlagewerk, das sich - in Anlehnung an die Diderosche Encyclodédie, die auch als Vorbild diente - als Enzyklopädie bezeichnete. Das zunächst als Gießener Enzyklopädie - Mitarbeiter waren vor allem Gießener Gelehrte -, später nach dem Erscheinungsort als Frankfurter Enzyklopädie bezeichnete Werk war ursprünglich auf 12 Bände angelegt, zog sich aber, obwohl auf biographische und geographische Artikel weitgehend verzichtet wurde, in die Länge und blieb schließlich mit 23 Bänden (bis K) unvollendet. Es erschien nachträglich (1807) noch ein Tafelband ("Erster Kupfer Band") mit 75 Kupfertafeln. Als Herausgeber fungierten die Gießener Historiker Heinrich (Henrich) Martin Gottfried Köster (1734 - 1802) und Johann Friedrich Roos (1757 - 1804). Die Bände des Werkes erschienen im großen Format sowie, aus Gründen der besseren Übersichtlichkeit, im Doppelspaltendruck. Der Umfang der Bände variiert zwischen ca. 740 und 1.050 Seiten. Alle Bände mit Titelkupfer, Text partiell mit Kopf- und Schlußvignetten. Vollständige Exemplare des unvollendet gebliebenen Werkes sind heute kaum erhältlich; angeboten werde in der Regel nur Einzelbände. Buchrücken partiell etwas berieben, Kapitale (vor allem untere) partiell etwas lädiert bzw. (bei zwei Bänden) mit leichtem Abrieb; die Gelenke der schweren, großformatigen Bände, die naturgemäß sehr starken Belastungen ausgesetzt sind, im Wesentlichen intakt, bei wenigen Bänden an den Kapitalen spannungsbedingt etwas eingekerbt; die sehr dünnen Bezugspapiere der Buchdeckel partiell mit Abschabungen (nur oberflächlich); Seiten sauber und nahezu fleckenfrei, allenfalls partiell mit leichter Hintergrundbräunung; bei Bd. 8 die ersten Blatt am unteren Rand etwas wurmspurig (ohne Textverlust). In toto sehr ansehnliches, würdiges Teil-Exemplar dieser seltenen, frühen Enzyklopädie, die in der Historie der deutschen Nachschlagewerke einen besonderen Rang einnimmt.
