We see in this book how Hungarian art in the early twentieth century was involved with the Viennese Secession, a radical art movement started in 1897 by Austrian painters, sculptors, and architects like Gustav Klimt and Otto Wagner. They broke away from traditional academic art to embrace modern styles, and to merge fine art with design. This volume perhaps shows a particularly Hungarian way of participating in this movement. This is only the second of two volumes which appeared together under this title. The first vollume contained the text of work - the short stories by Béla Révész, with uncials by Kozma. The second volume (this one) consists of thirty full-page zincographs by him, plus an additional two as frontispieces. Kozma (1884-1948) first acquired fame for his visual gifts as a book artist before his renowned achievements as an advanced architect and designer of the 20s and 30s. The illustrations fit well with the stories in 'Meeting Cinderella', an erotic fantasy written before the author began to focus on proletarian struggle and a socialist vision. This volume came from the collection of the seller's grandfather, Márkus Győző, a Hungarian engineer who left Hungary and came to Britain in 1939. Márkus and Kozma were friends - and Kozma designed Márkus' house in Budapest in the 1930s. They remained friends after Márkus left Hungary, until Kozma died in 1948. It is likely that this volume was a gift from Kozma to Márkus in the early years of their friendship. Worldcat finds only one copy of this book in UK libraries, in the British Library. It seems to be rare. An illustrated alphabet of 22 letters, with verses by Frigyes Karinthy (1887-1938) and illustrations by Kozma Lajos (1884-1948). Kozma Lajos was an influential architect and designer, an avant-garde representative of the Hungarian Art Nouveau who found the Budapest workshop in 1913, and the originator of an architectural style that became known as 'Kozma baroque'. In this charming book we see evidence of his lifelong interest in Hungarian, and especially Transylvanian, folk art. Cloth spine and boards, with ornate gilt decoration on front, and gilt edges at the top. Some slight wrinkling of cloth on covers and rubbing of corners, slight foxing/discoloration on some pages (though illustrations are beautifully clear and unmarked), and bumping of lower right corners. See photos. The final page indicates the production process (see photos): "The drawings for this work were made in 1918. The layout for the press was done by Sugar Jeno. The printing blocks by Angerer & Goschl Wien. The colour printing is by Kner Izidor, Gyoma, while the text-printing is the work of the Korvin Printing House in Budapest.
