320 S. Quart Gewicht: 1400 g.

Prestel Verlag catalogue & postal card laid in. world history. art history. travel & exploration. geography. anthropology. biography. ~ During a period of eight years exploring Oceania and the Americas, James Cook (1728~79) and the teams of artists and scientists that traveled as his passengers amassed a vast array of exquisite cultural art objects. James Cook: Gifts and Treasures of the South Seas illustrates and documents 500 of the finest of these objects for the first time. These pieces, brought back from Cook's three voyages (the first of which was in 1769), form an outstanding collection of non~European art, which today is unparalleled in both its breadth and scope. Amongst the scientists on the voyages were the German scholar Johann Reinhold Forster and his son. In cooperation with The Royal Society, which commissioned the British Admiralty to make the voyages, they returned to Germany with a vast collection, where it lay more or less undisturbed for over 200 years. It is only recently that specialists of the art of the Americas and Oceania have rediscovered the historical and cultural importance of this collection, now owned by the University in Cortingen (125 miles north of Frankfurt). This richly illustrated volume details the history of Cook's voyages and discusses the international importance of the collection in Gottingen. The objects are divided into three main groups, Polynesia, Melanesia and the Americas, and provide an essential reference for anthropologists, collectors and historians of the Southern Hemisphere.

Lavishly illustrated catalogue of the Cook/Forster collection of ethnographic artefacts, G?ttingen. Map of Cook's three voyages on front end-papers; 351 pp, 341 numbered catalogue entries. Only the main text articles are published in German and English (in two columns); the catalogue section, which commences on p. 277, is in English only. The full-page colour plates, pp. 97-138, are beautifully lit and photographed and stunningly reproduced; the Hodges engravings, in monochrome and set into the text, somewhat less so as there is an inherent problem in copying finely etched detail into half-tone.
