Theories about the temples' mysteries, partially solved, are described in this book, as is the key role played by the statues and carvings themselves in the solution. Who were the sculptors of Angkor? How did they live? Where did they come from? Why did they disappear? From a study of this book and from the realization, which comes with reading it, of the ability of the Khmer craftsmen and of the civiliza- tion they represented, the position held by European art is seen in truer perspective. Many superb photos support the text, and give emphasis to the wonder of Angkor from the power of its monumental architecture to the charm of its sculpture and carving.
