Da diese Stellung bei oberflächlicher Betrachtung stark an die übliche Haltung der Buddhabilder erinnert, wird sie in der Literatur vielfach als Buddhastellung bezeichnet. Sie hat aus dem gleichen Grunde mehrfach Anlaß gegeben, nach einem Zusammenhang zwischen keltischen und indischen Gottheiten zu suchen. Von Cernunnus sind bisher etwa 35 Abbilder auf uns gekommen. Er trägt auf dem Kopf ein Hirschgeweih, in den Händen meist einen Torques und manchmal eine Schlange. Das Geweih ist bei den Funden in vielen Fällen verloren, jedoch dann durch die zur Aufnahme der Zapfen bestimmten Löcher im Kopf bezeugt. Der Gott sitzt, und die Unterschenkel sind dabei stets gekreuzt, was zu dem eingangs bezeugten Vergleich mit den Buddhabildern Anlaß gegeben hat. Moreau sagt, diese Sitzhaltung sei den Kelten, die weder Sessel noch Stühle gekannt hätten, eigentümlich gewesen und somit als natürlich zu erklären. Auch de Vries schließt sich dieser schon früher von Mowat vertretenen Ansicht an. Daß diese Sitzhaltung natürlich gewesen sei, stimmt durchaus, dürfte aber kaum aus der Unbekanntschaft mit Sitzmöbeln zu begründen sein; andere keltische Gottheiten, z. B. die Pferdegöttin Epona, die drei Matronen mit dem Wikkelkind und der von den Römern vielfach als Merkur bezeichnete Gott sitzen meist auf Stühlen oder Bänken. De Vries meint (a. a. O., S. 106), daß Cernunnus noch eine sehr alte Gottheit sei und daß andere Gottheiten erst unter römischem Einfluß auf Sitzmöbeln dargestellt wurden (a. a. O., S. 165).
