Daß seine Gestalten den neuen Begriff heroischer Menschenwürde, den das Ende des 15. Jahrhunderts geprägt hat, in großer Eindringlichkeit verkörpern, ist eine weitere bedeutende Eigenschaft. Gerade in ihr hat Michelangelo die ihm vorausgehende Generation mit seiner ganzen Stärke überwunden, ja die Unnahbarkeit manches seiner Werke muß zuerst aus der Steigerung jener Vorstellung von Würde verstanden werden. Allein, Michelangelo teilt diese Auffassungen mit anderen Großen seiner Zeit, wie er mit ihnen viele und unverlierbare Werte der "Hochrenaissance" gemeinsam hat: Die edle Bewußtheit unnaiver Menschen, die die Fähigkeit zu großen Leiden: schaften in sich tragen; die aus den obersten Höhen menschlicher Wirklichkeit gegriffenen Typen; das weltbeherrschende Auftreten als künstlerisches Gegenbild der weltentdeckenden und :erobernden Epoche. Was ihn aber trennt von allen seinen Zeitgenossen, ist eine einzigartig folge richtige Verkettung jener großen Eigenschaften seiner Generation in jedem ein: zelnen Werk: Leidenschaft, Würde und Schönheit. Das erste Problem seiner Schöpfungen ist die Bändigung großer Leidenschaften durch die heroische Würde. Diese Zügelung wird als wirkender Vorgang realisiert und die Schönheit erscheint als die Rechtfertigung dieses Vorganges, nie als ein ablösbarer Selbstwert der Menschen. Part of the series 'Deutsche Lande Deutsche Kunst' which was founded by Burkhard Meier.This book was signed and inscribed to John J. McCloy, the former Assistant Secretary Of War and US High Commissioner to Postwar Germany. At the top of the signed page (s…ee photo) is written 'German American Youth Club.' The inscription reads simply 'Thank you, Mr. McCloy.' Below that are thirty separate signatures, presumably from members of the club. The inscription is dated '2 February 1950, Nuremnberg'. I would love to know whether any of the signers were or became significant political figures, or known in some other way, but I have no talent or patience for deciphering signatures. I haven't found any other copies of this book that were signed. I purchased my copy directly from the library of Mr. McCloy. There are 46 pages of text followed by a section of 128 photographs (Die Bilder) on unnumbered pages which I'm guessing total a little more than 100 (most of the pages have just one large photograph. You can see the covers in the photos. They have only minor soiling. There is a very small tear on both sides of the spine just off its top edge. There doesn't appear to be any loss. There's also a thin tear coming up a little ways from the front side of the bottom edge of the spine. It's superficial, has nothing to do with the binding. The cover edges are in pretty good shape, the rear bottom one does have a fairly small dent. Both of the bottom edges have a few spots of rubbing. All four corners have spots of rub-through. The page edges look good. The book is square and the spine look straight. The binding is solid. I didn't see any issues with the junctures between any of the facing pages or between the inside covers and their end papers. The pages are very clean. Scrolling through, I'm not finding any instances of soiling. The text pages are somewhat toned, but uniformly. The text pages are nicely supple. The photographs are on semi-glossy paper. They are very clean. There isn't any foxing or spotting. I didn't see any conspicuous corner creases, no placeholder creases. However, something pressed down and made a little crinkle near the bottom of some of these pages just off their outer edge. If begins around the 75th photograph and continues through to around the 116th. It is quite minor to my eye, not touching any of the photographs or what is printed below them, and measuring about 3/8th" by 3/4's of an inch. The photographs all appear to be in perfect condition.
