Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book details the emergence of craft guilds in medieval Muenster, leading up to the significant year of 1447 that changed everything. Prior to this, guilds were dominated by patrician landowners known as Erbmänner. However, in 1447, a shift occurred when commoners and guilds united to gain a more significant voice in the governance of their city. This agreement granted guilds equal say in civic matters and marked the beginning of a new era in Muenster's history. This book delves into the factors leading up to this change and explores the lasting impact it had on the relationship between the city's guilds and its ruling elite. It provides a captivating insight into the dynamics of medieval urban society, power struggles, and the ongoing negotiation between different social groups. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating evolution of craft guilds and communal organizations known as "brotherhoods" in the medieval German city of Münster. It traces their emergence as extensions of religious fraternities and their gradual transformation into influential players in the city's social and political life. Drawing on a wealth of archival documents and contemporary accounts, the author sheds light on the complex interactions between these organizations, the city council, and the bishop. By examining the guilds' statutes, rituals, and financial records, the book reconstructs their internal structures, membership requirements, and economic activities. It also explores the guilds' role in shaping urban society, from their involvement in religious ceremonies and social welfare to their involvement in shaping urban policies and defending the city's interests. The book's nuanced analysis sheds new light on the role of these organizations in shaping the social, economic, and political landscape of medieval cities, offering valuable insights for understanding the development of urban life in Europe during the Middle Ages.
