He received his MFA in 1964 from Rutgers University where he went on to become a tenured faculty member in Fine Arts. Kuehn has played a significant role in Process Art and Post-Minimalism, having participated in the groundbreaking exhibitions Eccentric Abstraction in 1966, curated by Lucy Lippard, and When Attitudes Become Form in 1969, curated by Harold Szeeman. Kuehn's Cape Cod connection began in the early 80s and continues to this day. The provisional nature of Kuehn's plein air studio in Wellfleet fosters experimentation. Major shifts in his work often begin here, and ongoing investigations, including the Gesture Project, are revitalized. He cannot leave geometry alone. Taunting the mute literalism of primary forms, he makes regular, irregular; hard, soft; closed, open. His forms are abstract and object-like, but never pristine or absolute.
