Freiheit und Gleichheit, die die Französische Revolution propagierte, verlangte, daß Bildung allen Menschen zugänglich sein mußte. Die Aufhebung der Leibe…igenschaft und damit die Verpflichtung zur Eigenverantwortung forderte in den Ostseeprovinzen Est-, Liv- und Kurland die Einführung eines flächendeckenden Schulsystems. Die baltische Ritterschaft, die Gutsherren und die evangelische Geistlichkeit unterstützten den Aufbau des Volksschulwesens für die Esten und Letten. Ihr Bildungsstreben, Betonung eigener Bildungsinhalte sowie die Lehrerausbildung und Gestaltung der Schulbücher führten zu unterschiedlichen, spannungsvollen Auseinandersetzungen. Es wird die sogenannte Germanisierung, die versuchte Russifizierung einerseits und der Einfluß des deutschen Schulsystems andererseits, untersucht. Die unterschiedliche Herkunft der verschiedenen Volksgruppen, ihr ständiges Bemühen, ihre Eigenart zu bewahren sowie die daraus entstandenen kulturellen Gegensätze blieben immer bestehen. Enthält folgende Beiträge: Detlef Kühn: Einführung in die Geschichte des Schulwesens im Baltikum. Lea Koiv: Über das Schulwesen in Reval im 17. Jahrhundert. Indrek Kiverik: Der politische Kampf um das Bildungswesen der Esten im 19. Jahrhundert. Andres Andresen: Die kirchliche Schulpolitik im Gouvernemet Estland im 18./19. Jahrhundert.
