Né en 1930 à Durban, a été initié, dès sa plus tendre enfance, aux traditions de l'oralité zouloue, et toute sa vie sera consacrée à l'apprentissage des traditions littéraires de son peuple (chant des louanges, aphorismes.). En 1953, nous le retrouvons à l'université du Natal, et il poursuit ses recherches à Londres, où il présente une thèse de doctorat qui traite de la tradition orale zouloue. Militant de la lutte contre l'Apartheid, il subit les affres de l'exil de Rome au Lesotho, du Lesotho à la Californie où il a demeuré en tant que professeur des langues et littératures africaines. Il vit actuellement en Afrique du Sud. Son oeuvre poétique est considérable; certaines de ses épopées comptent plus de 16 000 vers., surtout sa fameuse préface à une édition du Cahier d'un retour au pays natal d'Aimé Césaire, le pionnier de la Négritude.
