Hier Jallaks bedingungsloser Einsatz für eine sozialistische Heimat, sowohl in den ersten schwierigen Jahren unter der jungen estnischen Sowjetmacht als auch später gegen den Faschismus, und da Eduards Kollaboration mit den Deutschen und sein Kampf für ein bürgerliches Estland. Paul Kuusberg wurde 1916 in Tallinn als Sohn eines Bauarbeiters geboren. Er lernte Bautechnik und Schiffsmechanik und arbeitete bis 1940 als Bauarbeiter und Funktionär der Bauarbeitergewerkschaft. Während des Krieges kämpfte er in der Sowjetarmee. Nach dem Krieg war er als Journalist unter anderem am Zentralorgan der Kommunistischen Partei Estlands und als Chefredakteur an der Zeitschrift des Schriftstellerverbandes der ESSR Loo-ming" tätig. 1972 wurde ihm der Ehrentitel Volksschriftsteller der ESSR zuerkannt. Kuusberg ist vor allem Romancier. Dem Leser in der DDR wurde er 1973 bereits mit dem Roman Bitterer Sommer" vorgestellt."
