Since they are great, they are also costly, though often very limited in various respects. One perilous alternative is the state-giant of Thomas Hobbes. But there are other possibilities as well, such as the liberal state, effective, yet small or lean; or the dreamt-up state of the conservatives, based on the principle of subsidiarity, acting only as a complement to civil society. The fundamental thesis in this book is that the states in which we live are great, however weak. Je to dulezite i pro dalsi vedeni diskuse na tema nasi ustavy, nebot ti, kteri o tom rozhoduji, zpravidla vychazeji z toho, co o tom slyseli za posledni tyden v mediich. Zde se jim dostane na relativne malem prostoru fundovana informace o zakladech ustavni teorie ve vazbe notabene na problemy politickeho systemu. Je to podstatne prave proto, ze autor i zde zduraznuje, ze v ustavach nejsou rozhodujici slova, ba ani vety, nybrz jejich celkova konstrukce, hodnotovych zaklad a jejich celkove poslani. Neustale opakuji, ze v ustavach je obvykle malo napsano a hodne receno, a autor to v praci prokazuje.
