Jahrhundert - das insgesamt in Kategorien der Komödie denkt - in der Komödie sucht. Denn das ist nicht der lachende Mensch, der freie Mensch, der spielende Mensch oder der dionysische… Mensch; es ist der Mensch als gesellschaftliches Wesen, dessen Menschsein sich erst an den Deformierungen zeigt, die sich aus dem gesellschaftlichen Leben ergeben. Es ist der lächerliche Mensch. Betrachtet werden mit Wezel, Lessing, Colman und Garrick sowohl deutsche als auch englische Autoren. Johann Karl Wezels pessimistische Lustspiele um Eigensinn und Selbstsucht sind Fortschreibungen der Aufklärungskomödie wie auch Absage an diese. Sie bilden in dieser Arbeit den Fluchtpunkt für eine neue Perspektive auf Wezels wichtigste Einflussgeber, Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, George Colman und David Garrick. Die Neubewertung der antiken Komödie als theatralische Theodizee und die Neudeutung der Komödienfigur als von den Wechseln des Zufalls und der eigenen Imagination in Bewegung gesetzter Charakter durch die genannten Autoren wird bei Wezel ausgebaut zur Komödie einer Welt der deformierten Subjekte. Hiermit stellt er sich schroff gegen die gleichzeitig aufkommenden monumentalen Ich-Konzepte des Sturm und Drang. 277 Seiten, broschiert (Germanisch-Romanische Monatsschrift; Beiheft 20/Universitätsverlag Winter 2004). Da literarische Texte Wissen nicht nur 'transportieren', sondern buchstäblich in Szene setzen, gilt das besondere Interesse den Schreibtechniken, mit denen die Gegenstände und Episteme der 'fremden' Wissenskulturen zur Darstellung gebracht werden. Ein Teil der Beiträge rekonstruiert, mit welchen Erzählstrategien Autoren wie Goethe oder Jules Verne in ihren Romanen Erkenntnisse der Naturwissenschaften ihrer Zeit reflektieren. Andere Beiträge befassen sich mit Textkulturen, wie der 'Unterhaltungsmathematik' im Barock, die der kulturhistorischen Trennung von »scientia« und »poiesis« vorausgehen. Neben Gattungen wie Science-Fiction und Berichten Forschungsreisender des 19. Jahrhunderts, die gerade auch mit literarischen Mitteln neues Wissen hervorbringen, werden Autoren der Moderne vorgestellt, die naturwissenschaftliche Theorien als poetologische Modelle aufgreifen.
