Aggiungi al carrelloA nice example of a Victorian imitation-wood binding. Simulated exotic materials, such as papier mâché styled to resembled walnut wood, were a fashionable choice for binders in this decade. This volume has the bookplate of Anthony David Estill (1926-2002), the respected collector of Victorian illustrated books and publishers' bindings. Sextodecimo (125 x 72 mm). Contemporary brown varnished papier mâché boards decorated with gilt foliate pattern, brown roan spine lettered in gilt with raised bands, compartments tooled in gilt with blind rolls, boards edged in brass, brass clasp, brown coated endpapers, gilt edges, blue bookmarker. Housed in a custom black cloth solander box. Binding very lightly rubbed, craquelure to varnish as often, outer leaves foxed. A near-fine copy.
