Aggiungi al carrelloSoft cover. Condizione: Good. In 1844 Eliakim Littell started publishing "Littell's Living Age", a weekly literary journal. Mostly it was excerpts from works - both magazine and books - published elsewhere. At times correspondents purported to share material, and sometimes there were bits and snatches of literary news. Trying to… place this periodical in the scheme of things, I guess i would say it was a distant forerunner of periodicals like "The Reader's Digest", only with a higher literary pretension. Of particular interest is the announcement on the rear cover for the premier issue of Mary Mapes Dodge's "St. Nicholas Magazine", published by Scribner's. she would edit "St. Nicholas until 1905; the magazine lasted until 1940. Just peruse the table of contents for this issue to understand the nature of "Littell's Living Age" :: - THE PROTESTANT RESTORATION IN FRANCE IN THE LAST CENTURY -- (from "Fraser's Magazine") - JACK AND THE BEANSTALK, PART 1 -- by Miss Thackeray -- (from "Cornhill Magazine") …… Miss Thackeray (Lady Anne Isabella Thackeray Ritchie, 1837 - 1919) was the eldest daughter of English novelist, William Makepeace Thackeray. She was an esteemed writer in her own right, penning novels, essays, and social criticism. She had a good knack for taking old folk-tales -such as this "Jack and the Beanstalk", and revising them to reflect conditions in her time. Thus in this story Jack is a tenant farmer struggling against the greed of his landlord (the Giant). Presented here is Part One of the story. -TURKISH GEORGIA (From "Cornhill Magazine") — The author of this piece of reportage was identified in "Cornhill Magazine" as W.G.P. This was William Gifford Palgrave (1826 - 1888). In this essay about Georgia, he meant to correct the sad, and somewhat thoughtless, dismissal of that country by historian Gibbons. - THE REGENT ORLEANS AND HIS AGE ( from "Temple Bar") - by the Author of "Mirabeau" - NICOLE VAGNON - PART 1 - (from "Temple Bar") - A Story by Katharine Sarah Macquoid (Novelist, 1824 - 1917) Her most famous novel was "Patty". - THE OLD CATHOLIC CONGRESS AT CONSTANCE -- (from "The Saturday Review") - THE LESSONS OF THE AMERICAN MONETARY CRISIS (from "The Economist") - VICTOR EMANUEL'S RECEPTION IN VIENNA AND BERLIN (from "The Spectator") - POETRY : "An Ode" by Arthur O'Shaughnessy; "Gathered Ferns" by H.J.L. TITLE : Littell's Living Age ISSUE : Vol. IV, Fifth Series; From Beginning : Vol. CXIX, No. 1533 DATE : October 25, 1873 IMPRINT : Littell and Gay PLACE : No. 17 Bromfield St., Boston PROVENANCE : From the personal library of Rev. E. P. Powell. Once shelved in the personal collection of Reverend E. P. Powell (Edward Payson Powell, 1833 - 1915), graduate of Hamilton College and Union Theological Seminary. He was a Congregationalist minister, an author of books and an editorial journalist of prolific production. Powell worked in the service of Abolition and civil rights. He was a resident of Clinton N.Y. and Utica N.Y. DETAILS : Weekly Periodical; pages [193] - 236 (44 pp); approx. 6 1/4" x 9 1/2" ; pictorial wraps, sewn. (Advertisement for the premier issue of "St. Nicholas Magazine" on rear exterior. CONDITION -- VERY GOOD --This is a previously owned periodical that remains clean and presentable, with the following particulars noted : The original subscription mailing label is affixed to the front cover. A narrow damp stain displays at the top edge of the front cover and along the spine of the rear cover (These are hardly egregious); a split displays along the front joint (evidence of small mending neatly effected thereon) a bit of smudging and light spotting --- exterior sheets are somewhat weathered at edges, also with scattered nicking and small tears .else clean and presentable. The issue is complete. While some of the leaves have small tears and a some chipping, the interior is clean and presentable. This is the original periodical, not a modern reprint or facsimile. A CLEAN, SERVICEABLE SPECIMEN.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Blackstick Papers was written by Lady Ritchie. It does have some portraits in it. The book was published by G. P. Putnam's Sons in 1908 and appears to be a First Edition but is not specifically stated as such. This is an ex-library copy, has no dust jacket, and is in good cond…ition with pages that are yellowing and some library wear. It is 5 5/8" by 8 1/4" and has 291 pages with three portraits in it: Felicia Hemans, William Makepeace Thackeray, and "Jacob Omnium" and Marshal Pelissier. "Readers of my father's works will be familiar with the name of the Fairy Blackstick who lived in Crim Tartary some ten or twenty thousand years ago, and who used to frequent the Court of His Majesty King Valoroso XXIV. If I have ventured to call the following desultory papers by the Fairy Blackstick's name, it is because they concern certain things in which she was interested - old books, young people, schools of practical instruction, rings, roses, sentimental affairs, etc., etc." Thank you.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good. Published in 1881, bound in a quarter leather binding bound by Birdsall and Son of Northampton, this copy bearing the bookplate of its original owner, Lady Charlotte Schreiber, Lady Charlotte Elizabeth Guest (née Bertie; 19 May 1812 ? 15 January 1895), later Lady Charlotte Schreiber, was an English a…ristocrat who is best known as the first publisher in modern print format of the Mabinogion, the earliest prose literature of Britain. Guest established the Mabinogion as a source literary text of Europe, claiming this recognition among literati in the context of contemporary passions for the chivalric romance of King Arthur and the Gothic movement. The name Guest used for the book was derived from a mediaeval copyist's error, already established in the 18th century by William Owen Pughe and the London Welsh societies. The book is a small slim format, marking to both boards, small piece missing from lower corner of rear board, internally noticeable foxing to endpapers a few creased page corners else in good acceptable condition. this is a lighter book, overseas shipping costs will be reduced at checkout where possible.

A collection of essays on topics ranging from Joseph Haydn and Joseph Joachim to Mrs. Gaskell and Thomas Bewick. The eldest daughter of William Makepeace Thackeray, Lady Ritchie is noted especially as the custodian of her father's literary legacy, a…nd for short fiction that places fairy tale narratives in a Victorian milieu. She was also a step-aunt of Virginia Woolf, and is thought to have inspired the character of Mrs Hilbery in Woolf's novel Night and Day (1919). Octavo: vii, [1], 291, [1], [4, ads] pp. with a frontispiece and 2 plates. Original burgundy cloth binding, with gilt-stamped titles and decorations.
